Reflections on life at a boutique Asian film festival on the other side of the world
All the Far East Film Festival on Asia Times online!
Far East Film Festival continues to champion Asian cinema – and this year’s renewal delivered a distinctly Hong Kong flavor
All you want to know about the 19th edition of Far East Film Festival, here on Asia Times online!
An interview with...
...Roy Szeto, director of “Shed Skin Papa”.
Why did you decide to make this movie?
I graduated in the theatre academy of Hong Kong and I worked in TV for a while, but then I quit it because I felt it was like working in a factory, and honestly I found it quite boring. So I decided to do something closer to my degree and to my passion, that’s why I staged “Shed Skin Papa” in theatre. My producer suggested me to try to make a movie out of it and in the beginning I felt very sceptical about this opportunity. But then I gave it a try and I started casting actors.
You have a degree in theatre, what brought you to the cinema world?
Actually, I am also scholarly trained to be a film director and, to tell you the truth, in my movies there is always something from the theatre world and vice versa. I think theatre and cinema live together in my mind, they are naturally integrated so I don’t know which one influences the other.
Can you tell us why did you chose Francis Ng for the role of the Papa?
Francis Ng is a great friend of mine and he was definitely my first choice. Since the beginning I was completely sure of my decision, because I knew he was perfect for the role.
Your movie is about a father and son relationship. According to you, how much important is truthfulness in this kind of relationship?
I didn’t have a great relationship with my father, but while I was developing this project he passed away. So I understood that no matter how is your relationship with somebody, if he/she is open minded and you can listen to him/her again and again, you’ll get why he/she made a certain decision or chose to behave in a certain way.
