One of the most common "mistakes" I point out is characters not coming off as they are supposed to, according to author. No, you can't micromanage how every reader sees your characters. But if author thinks they are writing one thing and they are unaware they are writing the opposite...
Years ago. Fandom. I'm approached with the first draft, get asked for general stuff, what I think, how characters are characterised, whether the plot starts plotting clearly enough etc.
Main character comes off as not quite nice, borderline classist, mean girl archetype. Start of story. Ok, seems like we established some character flaws, I knew they were supposed to get out of their shell and backstory related trauma and make new friends. So there had to be some character development, right? Like becoming more open, less mean, whatever works, right? And whole classist thing would work in universe and would make lots of sense.
It turned out, character already IS nice, they do not judge anyone, they are not classist, they just are aware how loaded they are in comparison to people they just met, also they are treating other way they deserve since their first meeting! And I am horrible person that is hell bent on hating the character! And I want author to stop writing! Am absolutely the worst!
Ah, joys of vague statements as "I can take harsh critique" when it wasn't even a critique. Or harsh.
But, here's a plot twist.
Author argues how all is justified, cause they *personally* would act and think this and that...
My bad for not clocking it immediately. For my defense, I lived in the assumption they despised self-inserts taking faces of existing characters. And I answered how the character comes off as I was asked for. How dare I.
Another plot twist. Happened more than once. Or twice. Exact same event, down to author's defense of main character getting called "mean". Including "I don't want sugarcoating" spiel. Not exclusive to fandoms.
Now, most of the time authors don't take that personally, usually it goes like:
"Damn, how do I change it if I don't want them to come off like this?" "Change few words here, watch out how they interact with this character, cut this comment." "Oh, only this, it's not that difficult to change."
