I actually have a few reasons I went with "Dust" instead of "Murder."

The official Murder is said to never join Nightmare and is only interested in his own AU's well-being. That if he were to join Nightmare, it would be with the intent of killing him once his guard is down. (Murder is more of an antihero who took things way too far and destroyed what he was trying to protect. OG Nightmare is very evil and Murder would rather not have anything to do with him.) While this is actually true initially for HNBD Dust, it didn't last that way for long. So to make it clear that he is different than the official Murder, I used the other common fan name.

Next is the reason you pretty much gave. As you've all seen, Dust is not a big fan of what he did. Nightmare has enough angst coming from him that calling him Murder, and reminding him every time his name is called that he killed everyone he knew and loved... would not be helpful.

They have no mercy.

They know many things, including lots of ways to commit crimes

We will not hesitate to kill off your fave characters. Just try to stop us.
