I promised a Camus post, so y’all are getting a Camus post. Camus is funny, to me at least, because unlike Finn who is constantly kicked to the ground, Camus at least is rewarded somewhat for his suffering. But the thing is, the way he achieves a happy and fulfilling life is incredibly stupid.
So Camus is fairly normal in his first game, Shadow Dragon. He is essentially a general for Grust (the bad guys) and he refuses to join Marth despite Nyna, the princess of Archanea who is in love with Camus, trying to convince him to turncoat. Now don’t sell Camus short. He knows that Marth and company are the good guys. It’s just that he loves his country soooo much and respects his king soooo much that he refuses to switch sides. Anyway, Prince Mars ends up defeating him in battle.
Camus presumably dies in that battle until he doesn’t. Cut to Fire Emblem Gaiden/Echoes. A strange blond man has washed ashore, face down, ass up, completely naked. Tatiana, the Fire Emblem Echoes equivalent of a nun, finds him and goes, “That’s my husband now.” She nurses him back to health, but unfortunately all that nursing does nothing to solve his amnesia, which he has. So, at some point Emperor Rudolf notices him and is like, “Wow! This guy has S rank lances!” and names him “Ezekiel”. Camus decides to go by fucking “Zeke”, which is a way less intimidating name than “Ezekiel”. Like, imagine you are some peasant in whatever time period Fire Emblem games are set in, and you hear that Charlemagne, one of the king’s finest knights will be stopping by your village. Now picture him riding in, removing his helmet, and declaring, “I am Chuck.” It would ruin the moment! Anyway, so Zeke goes about, doing his thing, finds and joins Alm, and helps kill Duma or whatever. And hey! His memories are coming back! Sure, there are some painful memories, but he loves his new wife and doesn’t want her to worry. So things are looking up for ol’ Zekmus.
That is, until he learns that things have gone to shit in Archanea and decides to return to help out. And So Camus dives into the ocean and promptly washes ashore on Archanea, face down, ass up, completely naked except for a cool mask his buddy Conrad gave him. And guess who’s on the shore! It’s Prince Mars who turns to his beautiful, powerful wife and goes, “Awww can we keep him?” Marth then attempts to name this naked stranger, but Camus interrupts him, saying that he totally has a name and that it definitely is not “Camus”. Camus tells Marth that his name is “Sirius”, which is a totally fine name and fitting for an incredibly skilled paladin, except for the fact that it sounds exactly like “serious” the personality trait that Camus is known for! That’d be like if your young, bubbly troubadour you get early on said that her name was “Hapi”. It’s just a little too on the nose. Anyway, Camus helps out Marth and helps awaken his old flame from Medeus’s control, and she totally can tell that it’s him under that mask, and he tries to deny it, but she knows. Camus has to leave her, though, because he has a loving wife on whatever continent Alm is from. And so, at the end of Mystery of the Emblem, Camus once again wades into the ocean so that he might wash ashore once more.
Personally I’m not sure whether Zeke or Sirius is stupider. I just know that they’re both dumb. Like, they could have chosen any other names for Camus, but they went with two names on the opposite spectrum of stupidity. And I didn’t touch on the fact that canonically his voice changes when he becomes Zeke. So either he decided to modulate his voice so that people wouldn’t recognize him, or all that seawater did something to his vocal cords.
I really wish there were more returning characters like Camus, because you only get this kind of dumb when you are one of the most recurring characters in the entire series
