Meet Samantha “Sam” Bauer. She is 25 years old, from Roswell, Georgia, and wrote to Juliet because after her fiance was killed in the line of duty, her emotional instability ruined her career.
(+) Personable, loyal, patient
(-) Emotional, anxious, distractable
Sam was raised to be the exact opposite of what she is now.
She was raised in a criminal home, where one parent was a kidnapper and rapist, and the other was a drug dealer and addict because of it. An only child, it was easy enough for Sam's mother and father to provide for the three of them. Up until Sam was nine, her father was with the family, and all her mother did was deal. But three years after her father got arrested, her mother became so depressed that she started using half of what she was supposed to be dealing, and Sam had to pick up the slack. Petty theft, garbage picking- typical things for a twelve year old trying to feed herself. It was when she got caught trying to slip a loaf of bread out of her local grocery store that her uncle, who was on the police force of the neighboring town, finally rescued her. In just a few short months, Sam became incredibly close with her uncle, and soon began to admire what he did for a living. He tried his damndest to keep people safe, regardless of the price or danger. Sam started thinking about doing the same, specifically with adolescents going down the same path she had been.
When she was sixteen, her career path was solidified. Her uncle was killed in the line of duty, and Sam took it upon herself to continue protecting people in his honor. As soon as she turned eighteen, the minimum age for joining the force, she walked into the police department, stated her intentions, and never looked back. Two years later, after lots of training and classes to help her gain the needed skills, Sam was officially a member of the Roswell Police Department. It was there, at age twenty-two, that she met her boyfriend and future fiance, Jay Crawford. An officer in a different division of the PD, Sam and Jay spent a lot of time together outside of work, and ended up falling for each other. Two years later they were engaged, and only a year after that, Jay was murdered in the line of duty during a hostage situation.
Sam had been at home at the time, watching the faceoff on the local news. When she saw a body being carried out of the building, she didn't think anything of it. A half hour later, after reading the headline "LOCAL POLICE OFFICER KILLED IN HOSTAGE NEGOTIATIONS" scrolling across the bottom of her television screen, she had a feeling. But when her phone rang and she saw that number on the screen, she knew. She was barely able to answer the phone, knowing what she'd hear on the other end, and as soon as she hung up, she was on the floor, curled into herself as she cried.
It was a downhill spiral from there. Emotional instability, a drinking problem, disregard for her own life, and one careless and reckless decision after another. About three months after Jay's death, Sam was let go from the police force, and finding solace in frequent letters to Juliet. She was stunned when she received an invitation to Juliet's mansion in the mail, and after some serious thought, she decided to go, if only to get away from all the memories Roswell held of her uncle, her ruined career, and worst of all, Jay.
Nothing, really. Sam just needs to get away from Roswell for a while. She needs the opportunity to clear her head, and that sure as hell won't be happening at home.
