The question gives Alana pause, but she pushes through it. There are plenty of answers she could give him–– plenty that he does not need to hear.
“I don’t know, Will,” she concedes. He sounds deeply unwell–– disconnected in a way that scares her, that’s worse than she’s ever heard him. Her brows knit together and her stomach twists at the request, the way his voice shakes as he utters it.
“I’ll stay, don’t worry. Just try to take some deep breaths.”
She’s half-dressed, still in her pajama shirt with jeans from the weekend that she pulled out of her laundry bag thrown on. The phone is cradled between her cheek and her shoulder and she shoves a few things into her bag as she steps into her boots. Will’s voice comes through the speaker again, and his words cause a painful twist in her heart.
“I’m here, Will, I’m on my way. Can you tell me a little bit about where you are? I need to make sure you aren’t in the road. You don’t have to tell me anything too specific, just... try describing what you see.”
Her bag thuds in the passenger seat and she starts her car, eyes wide with worry. She doesn’t bother taking off the coat she threw haphazardly on, she just drives, phone mounted on a stand so she can follow the directions to his location.
“I’m on the road now, Will. It looks like it’s going to be about forty minutes. Are you going to be okay for that long?
