Sultan Mehmed II & his stepmother, Mara Hatun (Mara Branković) in episode one of Mehmed Bir Cihan Fatihi
New promotional picture of the main cast of Mehmed Bir Cihan Fatihi
A better lot fell to Murad’s other nobly born wife, Mara, daughter of George Brankovic. She was sent back to Serbia with rich presents and an imposing retinue, though it is not known whether Mehmed’s conduct was dictated by fear of the despot’s vengeance or by the deputation from Smederevo, bearing condolences and the request that the late sultan’s widow be permitted to return home. In any event, Mara was a shrewd diplomat and was able to incline Mehmed to her wishes as long as she lived. She seems even to have received ample funds for her support from the sultan’s treasury. The good relations between Mara and her stepson may be inferred from the mere fact that after her father’s death she returned to Turkey, where she remained until her eventful life came to an end in her widow’s residence at Jezevo (Eziova; now Daphni), southeast of Thessaloniki, on September 14, 1487.
