Fat Fook stems from the Chinese word for “Fa” which means to gain, and “Foo” which means prosperity or luck. So Fat Fook literally means to gain or increase luck, which we all definitely need. The Globe Tower branch has a cozy and inviting ambiance with its Asian appeal mixed with a modern vibe. The chromatic cherry architectural accents and the porcelain bowls used as fixtures also lend to the bright and cheerful atmosphere.

Fat Fook Manila is owned and managed by the same group that operates Ramen Nagi. It was conceptualized by the group’s executive chef, Rachel Kao, who was born in Taiwan but grew up in the Philippines. The group is looking forward to opening two or three more new branches by the first quarter of 2019.

Taiwanese food as well as Chinese food is very familiar to Filipinos, so it is very easy for us to enjoy their specialties. Taiwan cuisine tends to be a bit salty, sweet, and sometimes spicy, flavors which we also love. Fat Fook Manila tries to adjust its dishes to suit the Filipino palate, but Chef Rachel still keeps the dishes as authentic as they can be, especially since she inherited the recipes from her parents.

A small takeout counter is available right near the entrance which is perfect for Bonifacio Global City’s busy workers and residents. Aside from getting your delicious lunch to-go, you can also order their refreshing milk teas and beverages like this huge Taro Milk Tea (P118).

The media guests were treated that afternoon to a food tasting event that featured 17 of their Taiwanese favorites. That may seem like the entire menu already, but Fat Fook offers even more. We started with the Taiwanese Sausage (P328) which are filled with crunchy garlic. These bite-sized sausages are full of flavors to whet your appetites.

Other appetizers included the Tofu with Century Egg and Pork Floss (P228), Pork Spareribs Raddish Soup (P288), and the Oyster Misua (P108). What is sure to get your attention is the Fried Stinky Tofu (P228) which you can definitely smell a mile away. It does take some effort to get used to the smell, but similar to our Durian, those than can get through its funky smell will enjoy nibbling on these stinky tofu.

One of the signature dishes in Taiwan is the Pork Xiao Long Bao (P258) which are filled with a delicious soupy broth and a pork dumpling oozing with rich and warm flavors. Make sure to bite into the xiao long bao slowly to sip its soup first, or else you might burn your mouth.

If you want something more special, order the Truffle Xiao Long Bao instead with its elegant truffle flavor and aroma.

Filipinos love eating isaw or chicken intestines, and it seems Taiwan has something similar with the Fried Intestines (P208).These are a crunchier and saltier version of the isaw.

One of Fat Fook’s signature items is their Fat Fook Chicken Chop (P308) with its Asian flavors. This comes deep fried with a special breading for that added crunchiness. What’s amazing is that the chicken remains juicy inside.

The Cua Pao (P228) is another savory selction that is also easy to eat on the go. A thick slice of pork is engulfed inside a Chinese bun drizzled with a sweet sauce. 

One of the most popular Taiwan street food is the Oyster Omelette (P288) and you can expect an authentic version here at Fat Fook with its Taiwanese pechay and the thick egg wrap. The String Beans with Minced Pork (P188) is a healthier option, while the Taiwan Style Fried Noodles (P228) and the Kiampong (P368) are just the carbs you need to satisfy your hunger.

We’re not finished yet because there are more dishes to choose from at Fat Fook. The Chef's Beef Tendon Hotpot (P308) would be a good option for those who like eating these soft gooey tendon that comes with a little kick.

My favorite dish that afternoon was actually the Black Pepper Beef (P468) with its savoury layer of spices and flavors. This would go so well with rice.

Now for those dining solo or in a hurry, order their Rice topped with Taiwan Minced Pork and Egg (P168) for a fast but power-packed bowl.

Just when we thought we had sampled the entire menu at Fat Fook, out comes a few of their new dishes which would be launched together with the new branch. Among these exciting new items are the West Lake Soup, Tantanmien Ramen, and Fried Chicken Skin.

There are a lot of spicy standouts here like the Chili Dumplings and the Spicy Diced Beef. 

Even more spiciness comes your way with the Spicy Chicken Chops, a spicier and more fiery version of the favorite Chicken Chops. They even have a version called the Cheesy Chicken Chops with a thick layer of melted cheese sitting proudly on top of the fried chicken.

Whether you are missing the night market in Taiwan or just want to try some Taiwanese comfort food, Fat Fook Manila is now much closer as they open their 5th branch and counting. Congratulations to the management team of Fat Fook for another successful opening.
