Day 86: Chasing Unicorns
I’ve gotten into the habit of cycling to local parks to get my work done. I think it’s because I get tired of being cooped up in the cell that is my dormey on-campus apartment. The overhead lighting is fluorescent and the walls are stark white and the air is heavy unless you have the built-in fan on full blast all day. There’s also the fact that I have a roommate who shares my room. We’re pals, of course, but I’ve got this psychological deficiency where I literally cannot focus to my full potential if there is another human being in the room. This mostly applies to my creative endeavors, like writing screenplays. And since that is kind of a major part of my life now, I need to be as productive and prolific as possible. Hence my migration to suburban neighborhood parks.
And my short journeys via bicycle have proven to be fruitful. For example, I came across this chalk-drawing across the bike path on the way.
“Chase your dreams” has been my theme for 2018, and fatefully, it has been reflected in many of my fortunes thus far. Unfortunately, my actual dream-chasing has not been the romantic kind of self-reflective journey you might expect. Actually, I don’t know that chasing one’s dreams every would be a romantic notion because I’m starting to realize that dream-chasing involves a lot of paperwork and prerequisites. In my case, it involves lengthy stretches with my laptop fulfilling analysis for an internship. But the point of the internship is to open doors and give me experience and all that jazz. It’s working, I think. It’s just that....when you’re 5 hours into a script coverage for a script you know isn’t worth a production company’s time, you start wishing that the unicorn you’re chasing--a position in the film industry--was actually a real unicorn.
The chalk drawing covered that too. So I’m wondering if this unicorn rendered on asphalt is meant to be metaphorical or literal...
Unicorns have also been a grand theme in my life these past three months, but that’s another story for another entry.
Yesterday I learned that New Zealand has impressively minimal spiders. Also no venomous animals or insects. The main venomous spider is called katipo and is basically a myth because hardly anyone sees them let alone gets bit by one. All of the dangerous things I was worried about when thinking of moving someplace more tropical are not there. And the people are generally happy. Guess where I'm headed in less than a year!
