There are a ton of ways to compost for a healthier garden. We are experimenting with a new style for several reasons. One we have a ton of leaves still to compost and two we want to improve the quality of our garden soil quickly, we are a family that loves our own homegrown food.
There are pros and cons to any type of composting.
Getting the balance of nutrients just right takes more effort.
It requires more raw material to start
Obviously it will be done in less time
When done correctly there will be a higher nutrient content
Shredded leaves and grass
Large piece(s) of upholstery fabric or carpet remnant
Choose a large area with plenty of sunlight
Layer materials into a pile(s) that is 4 feet wide and 3 feet deep.
Add water, you should be able to pick up a handful of materials and wring it out like a sponge
Cover the pile(s) with fabric of your choice.
Every 2 days rake the out edges to the top of the pile.
After raking use a pitch fork to turn making sure to grab the materials from the inside of the pile and bringing them to the top so that the outside goes to the inside.
After approximately 14 days shovel the freshly made compost into your garden or into a container to save for your garden.
