The Hollow Kingdom Trilogy Review
I found the Hollow kingdom Trilogy a very intersting historic fantasy series. The main story is about how goblins are stealing young girls to make them their brides. This theme of abduction which we find in many greek and roman myths (Ion, Europa, Helen, Sabines) is taken very seriously and is given to its blreak reality. Survival issues force the Goblins to deny those girls' freedom and take them away from their families. Despite this we see that the different heroines do not treat the acts of goblins the same way.
The first book which gives its name to the series, The Hollow kingdom, is the introductive one. The eldest of two recently orphnaed girls, Kate finds herself being pursued by the goblins in order to become a goblin king's wife. The young girl will do anything in her power to escape their attacks and especially those of the Goblin King Marak who's one of the emblymatic and delightul characters of the series. One of the drawbacks of the first book is that the final part of the story is not so well written. There are intersting ideas but it looks like the author did not know how to develop them properly. However I would not suggest to let this discourage you from picking the book, it's after all Dunkle's first novel and she gets better.
The second book Close Kin resolves around Kate's sister Emily and talks about prejudice, racism ans stereotypes and introduces some new characters. I believe it's the darkest book of the trilogy. The third book takes place thirty years after the first one and it centers on the rivalry among Goblins and Elves with the heroine Miranda stuck in the middle.
The focus on different characters may seem strange at first but all in all it was a good thing for the books. Not the same characters hold the main part in all the books. They do not dissapear but they do take one step behind for new ones. That allows more room for other personalities, new stories and new themes to be explored. In the end you are glad for getting to know all those heroes and heroines.
Despite the heavy themes and heavy atmoshpere all the books are written with a lot of sense of humor and give the reader some amazing quotes and some impossible characters like the snake Charm.
One of the positive aspects of the Hollow Kingdom Trilogy is the different portraiyal of Goblins and Elves. They differ a lot from the classic standard set by Tolkien and are closer to folk belief. The Goblins are described as hideous, deformed creatures who love fashion notheless, are smart, tricky, love jokes and come across as rather cool. Elves are not always kind and that wise. They were made to be pretty and that's all. They live in a calm pace of life and appreciate all things pretty and beautiful. Miranda, one of the human heroines remarks that they are not very productive but you get to like them too. Dunkle actually gave her Goblins and Elves an eastern origin, an unusual yet intersting element.
If you have a fantasy book you like do not hesitate to tell me about it. I already have a list with authors and books I'd like to present but I would love to hear your suggestions too.

It seems to me that humour is everybody's way of keeping sane and standing off from the situations so that they can see it intellectually, as well as emotionally, and I don't know whether you've noticed, but if somebody tells a joke, it's nearly always a mini fantasy.

And indeed if you think you're a genius at something, what you achieve is very much according to your expectations; if you think you're no good, you're not going to get anywhere.

This is ridiculous, I mean, wholly ridiculous. It never did any child any harm to have something that was a tiny bit above them anyway, and I claim that anyone who can follow Doctor Who can follow absolutely anything.
