Erit...
I had a little trouble approaching how to name the world in which these characters reside⦠Specifically because I feel like any sentient race of people would have been calling the land on which they lived "earth" since they could speak.
There's a lot of sci-fi that refers to the earth as 'Terra' once people get to space and realize that there are other planets with civilized people out there. But it's always just a little weird that those aliens have actual fucking names for their planets, considering the fact that they would have probably just called it some variation of 'earth' since they were able to speak, right? Because there was a time in history where no one knew that earth was a 'planet' among other 'planets.'
Did it even have a name back then?
I guess the point is, I played around with the idea of just calling the world 'earth' due to the previously-mentioned reason. However, that could get confusing, as people might thing that I'm referring to our earth, or that this is a future-earth or an alternate timeline earth.
There is space travel in this world, and there has been for a couple hundred years. I imagine that once the planet became spacefaring, the people upon it thought maybe their planet should have an official name.
And so I have called it Erit. Which is the elvish word for 'ground.'
Erit is a rock giant orbiting a single star. It is approximately the size of Saturn, and orbits its sun perfectly in the middle of the habitable zone. It has six moons, though only two are close enough to affect the tides.
Its orbit and rotation are a bit odd, possibly due to unnatural forces both current and in the past. As such, its seasons vary in length and intensity; a summer might last a whole year during one orbit, and then last only three months the next, for example.
The surface of the planet is mostly like earth. It is made up of water oceans and continents that tend to shift much quicker than what we would be used to, due to the influence of Ziro, the goddess of earth. Ziro has also created several land bridges between continents; it's literally possible to travel the entire planet on foot or by car, if you really wanted to.
Erit is very old, and has had the time, space, and resources to allow many sapient beings to evolve. (Though some, like banshees, were created by magic.) They are quite varied, and live across every continent.
The most common species are fauns and elves, followed closely by humans.
