Hanahaki.

The disease of unrequited love.

Sasuke laid in his bed thinking of the check-up he had went to a few days ago. The sunlight creaked through his bedroom window warming up the room. He could hear birds and insects chirp merrily outside. It was a beautiful day today.

Yet, he was dying.

He was dying of an incurable disease. A rare, but fatal disease that only happened to a few people in history. The disease of unrequited love. He was dying because of unrequited love.

It was all so laughable.  

A knock was heard at his doorstep.

“ Good morning, Sasuke-kun,” a soft voice answered as Sasuke opened his door.

Her midnight blue hair shined brightly under the morning sun. With eyes that held the color of snow and thick, soft lashes that sat just above them, she held a warm gaze as she greeted him. Her body held an elegance that only a prestigious clan like hers would have, with delicate pale skin wrapped in a yukata-styled lavender dress that flowed just past her knees. The dress fit her nicely, showing off her body while working to only show a minimal amount of skin. She held a small brown basket in her hands that contained tea leaves and painting supplies.

Hinata Hyuga.

He held his breath.

“ May I come in?” She asked.

Sasuke stepped aside to let her in.

“ You’re early.” He answered back.

“ I was excited since you had been busy these past few days.” She responded.

They walked through the living room until they had arrived to the door that led to his backyard. He opened the door and placed the supplies along the porch, while she made tea. When he had finished setting everything, she sat back down with a tray of hot tea and small snacks taken from his fridge.

They sat in silence. It was a normal thing between them. She would paint whatever came to her mind, while he would relax and quietly watch her. Sometimes he would join in, but for the most part he would just observe the girl. If he wasn’t watching her, he would be resting in meditation.

Sasuke did not know how exactly this arrangement had happened. It had began a little over half a year ago, but there was no set event that had caused this to occur. At first, she would only come over once a week, but that soon became almost every day. However, he didn’t mind and enjoyed the quiet time they shared together in the mornings. The two would rarely talk, but they both savored the silence.

He slowly drank his tea as he watched Hinata paint.

Today, she was painting flowers.

He felt his heart stop.

“ Why flowers?” Sasuke asked her.

She turned her head to the right in surprise. He would normally never ask her about the things she painted.

“ What do you mean?” She answered back.

Sasuke stared at the girl until her cheeks were pink with blush. She looked downwards in embarrassment. He was always amused by this, though he never showed it.

“ Why are you painting flowers today?” He asked again.

Hinata let out a soft sigh. She looked up at the sky watching the clouds slowly pass by. It was a habit of hers that Sasuke had noticed over the time they had spent together. She would do it whenever she became lost in her thoughts in an attempt to formulate what to say.

“ There’s a story that I’ve been reading. It’s about a boy who fell in love with a girl, but she was already in love with someone else. She couldn’t love him back, but he still continued loving her. He continued loving her until he became sick with disease. He would throw up flowers every time he thought of her and every moment he would try to love her. He didn’t care though as long as she was still happy. In the end, he died in a bed of flowers that came from his own mouth,” She quietly explained.

“ That’s a sad story.” He replied.

She looked back at him with a sad smile.

“ It is. I cried while reading it. The boy truly loved her. He loved her even when she couldn’t love him back and didn’t ask for anything in return. All he did was continue loving her until he finally died.”

“ So why did you draw these flowers?” Sasuke asked again.

“ Because I wished the girl could have seen the beautiful flowers he had created from the love that he had held for her. Then maybe the girl would have returned her feelings for the boy too.”

She turned back to continue painting.

He reached out to stop her hand.

“ Are you in love with someone?” He quietly asked as his hand gently held her wrist.

She looked at him in slight shock. He had never grabbed her before.

“ Yes.”

He could see it in her eyes.

“ Does he love you back?”

Her eyes shifted slightly downwards before she gave him another smile.

“ No.”

They did not talk after that. The rest of the morning was spent in silence. Despite the warm weather, the stilled quietness, and warm smile Hinata gave him, Sasuke felt nothing.

He only felt his heart break.

Later that night, he spent an hour vomiting in the bathroom. It burned his throat. The pain made his body convulsed again. When the vomiting finally stopped, he went to shower and clean himself off. It wasn’t until late into the night that he would fall asleep. However, he had noticed one thing that was different before the fatigue finally caught up to him.

The flower petals had turned pink.
