This is not exclusive to SPN, but it’s extremely prevalent there and I think it’s bleeding over into other fandoms.
I wish people would stop interrogating actors about their headcanons, and then either getting angry if they don’t agree or posting “XYZ confirmed, you can’t disagree anymore.” First, actors are not the writers, and just because they’re the face of the show doesn’t mean they control canon.
Second, if you approach and actor and give an extremely personal reason why you feel a character has a certain sexuality/etc, how is the actor supposed to respond? If they say, no, they will be criticized for not being open minded, and if they say yes, they could be going into conflict with the show runners/writers/etc.
Characters resonate differently with each person, including the actors. Given that fandom is built off of fan interpretation and Death of the Author, I don’t understand this obsession with using actors to “prove” something is true.
An actor holding a different head canon than you does not invalidate you or your interpretation. It doesn’t make it untrue or give other fans the right to put you down. However, I feel like it’s important to acknowledge that goes the other way too.
