When people say "fanfic should be okay to sell because fanart is okay to sell". But fanart is in a similar legal area as fanfic... Artists regularly get warned or fined at conventions for selling fanart. Maybe someone has anecdotally observed that more fanart is sold via commission online than fanfic is, which makes it seem like fanart is in the clear, but all of those little private online sales are happening under the table and out of sight, or at least out of sight ENOUGH from companies for those companies to really notice. It's obvious once you start putting fanfic and fanart up in conventions, which are regularly given attention by ip holders, neither is safe.
