Throngs of ghosts, superheros, pirates and festooned pets parade down the avenue on Halloween night, collecting candy and reveling in the spooky, the strange and the fantastical.

Way 48/100 Garnett’s, anchoring the corner of Park and Meadow is alluring - it simply draws you in. Whether it’s the fanned shape of the building itself, the cheery paint, or the multicolored chairs lined up by the wall that bring you in initially, it’s the warmth, quality and reliability that keep you coming back. The interior, textured by tin ceilings, warm woods and an array of art and decor on the walls feels cozy and intimate, not unlike a hug, or a trip to grandma’s (the coolest and most interesting of grandmas). Settle into a table or sit up at the bar - a great option if you want to get a closer look at the mouthwatering cakes and pies. No seats left? Order to-go and take your picnic to the park in one of their sturdy wicker baskets. If you’re in the mood for snack plates, salads or a sandwich of any kind, you’ll surely find what you’re looking for here - cold, hot, multi-ingredients or simple - soup, chips or pickles on the side… at Garnett’s, it’s hard to make a wrong choice.

Way 35/100 Nothing says ‘RVA Spring’ like fresh leaves, sunshine and packed patios, right?  Almost right! Add Halcyon Vintage’s spring rummage sale in the mix and you’ve got yourself an extra beautiful April weekend. People (...and my closet) will quickly assure you that Halcyon Vintage Clothing is a winner not just in spring time, but any time of year.  From fanciful frocks and silk scarves to jaunty caps and sharp corduroy jackets, the ever-changing but always colorful displays (and cute store dog) are worth the trip.

Way 34/100 “There are places I remember....” - truly appropriate words to pay homage to just one of the many historic and unique homes in the fan district - one which happens to be particularly near and dear to my heart. Next time you take a walk through The Fan or one of Richmond’s many interesting and historically-rich neighborhoods, slow down your steps just a little... take time to observe and appreciate all the little details. Not only the color of the door, or the detail of their porch brackets, but the bike dropped outside the door, the cat peeking out from under the curtain, the woman working in her garden, the couple on the porch swing...the new potted plant on the front stoop.  These houses are all someone’s home, and what’s inside the home makes the outside far more beautiful. Get out there, observe and enjoy this beautiful city!
