THE STORY SO FAR

So Finn Effing Balor has just revealed himself as the third man in the new Shield in a Hell in a Cell match vs Seth Rollins. Predictably it’s astounding; two of the best physical performers in the entire company having a completely classic match complete with high spots out the ass. Predictably Finn Balor doesn’t want to win by escape so much as he wants to crush Seth Rollins underneath his heels (literally). He has ample time to escape but it’s clear he just wants to torture Seth as long as possible which ends up biting him in the ass when KO and Cody recover from their matches and swarm the ring, trying to pull Seth out. They get one of the walls of the cage down and Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose hit the ramp. Seth pretty clearly escapes and “wins” the match but it’s a moot point as the six of them proceed to destroy fucking everything. The cage, the ring, the announcer’s table, the first few rows, the barricades, the titantron, Alberto Del Rio’s Car, Xavier Woods’ new trombone, everything. The locker can’t even get down to stop them because there is so much debris flying around. It’s a small war that continues until Seth grabs a go-kart and starts driving away before Roman Reigns spears him out of the cart and into the barricade. Team Nega-Shield faces down the New Shield at the top of the ramp; HIAC ends amid chaos and destruction.

Leading up to Survivor Series, we have a more cold war between the Shield and the Nega-Shield. Seth Rollins and his crew are frazzled so they corner GM Michael Cole in his office and demand that the Shield get punished for destroying the ring. New Shield gets put in a gauntlet of matches in increasingly improbable odds (Dean Ambrose vs Tyler Breeze/Adam Rose/Jack Swagger, Finn Balor vs the Wyatt Family, Roman Reigns vs The New Day) and come out on top only to have Nega-Shield jump them after the show. This goes on until Dean Ambrose demands a series of matches at Survivor Series which is not really the point of the PPV. They go mostly 50/50 with KO defeating Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns beating Cody Rhodes, and Finn Balor going over Seth Rollins before the business with Bayley happens.

So the business with Bayley happens and the Monday after Seth won’t even leave his dressing room without private security agents escorting him to the ring. It is essential that this is not played up as comedy which means JBL needs to be gagged or take a leave of absence (“HYUK HYUK MAGGLE SETH ROLLINS GOT CHASED BY A BUNCHA GIRLS HYUK HYUK HYUK.”) More than that, they are now being divebombed by NXT guys randomly, the first of which are Colin Cassidy and Enzo Amore who gank Cody and KO and make their debut on the main roster by running them out of the ring.

Seth is frothing at the mouth at this point and at this point, Roman Reigns gets a little…cocky. He’s got his boys back, he’s on top of the world and he demands a match with Seth Rollins at TLC for the WWEWHC. Seth is 60000% done at this point…at which point Seth gets a terrible, awful, horrible idea. He says okay, Roman, okay Mr. Bigshot I’ll give you your match at TLC. It’ll be an Ironman TLC match for the WWEWHC. And, because he’s such a nice guy, he’s going to throw in a little sweetener.

If Seth Rollins (The Man, The Architect, Crossfit Jesus) loses to Roman Reigns of all people, he will step down and take a hiatus and disband the Nega-Shield. Michael Cole will be allowed to run the company how he wants and Roman will be WWEWHC.  

But

If Roman Reigns loses to Seth Rollins, not only will he blow his shot at the title, he will be kicked off the main roster. He will not be allowed back onto the main roster until he wins some kind of accolade in NXT (NXT Title, NXT Tag Title, or the Dusty Rhodes Tag Tournament). Roman accepts because hey he won the WWEWHC once from Seth, he can do it again, right?

TLC rolls around and two important things happen.

The first thing that happens is that Dean Ambrose has a brutal brutal TLC match with KO. We’re talking gigging as much as you can get away with on a PG show. Dean Ambrose gets killed after a long, bloody match, cracked in the head by KO who had to be pulled away from Dean who had to be helicoptered out. Roman Reigns looks devastated but Finn Balor tells him he has to stay in the game.

Roman Reigns goes into the ladder match like a raging bull and Seth Rollins is the matador. He baits Roman into numerous traps (i.e. baits a Driveby and pushes his leg out so he falls on his ass out of the ring, tripping a spear and sending him through the ropes). It’s clear halfway through the match that Roman Reigns is out of tricks; it’s the Mr. Freeze fight from Arkham City only Seth Rollins knows all the tricks in Roman’s bag. He works on his limited movepool but also just winds him, running circles around him and using his agility against Roman at every turn.

Roman gets three falls really early but after ten minutes it becomes clear that Roman is just out of gas and Seth won’t let him rest. Seth pulls out four falls to Roman’s three; Seth retains and Roman is off the main roster. Not only that, he has to leave the building ASAP which means security comes and actually drags him out of the ring.

The Story So Far

When last we left the story, Finn Balor was revealed as the Shield’s sixth column, staring down Seth Rollins in a Hell in a Cell match...

So let’s forget about that and go back to the Divas Division!

Paige has her championship and Kevin Owens is her hulking gorilla attack dog who mutilates anyone she sics him on. She’s kinda growing drunk with power and while she never sics KO on any of the ladies, his presence at ringside is enough to discourage any skullduggery. On top of this, she calls up Emma, Dana Brooke and Alexa Bliss to serve as her yes-girls/enforcers who actually do gang up on Divas in the ring.

And throughout this whoooooooooooooooooooooooooole angle Paige is going full Ebony Darkness Dementia Way only instead of calling everyone preps, she’s calling everyone “Divas” like its an insult. She and Bliss and Brooke and Emma are “real women wrestlers” here to save the WWE from “fake ass reality stars” like the Bellas and Naomi (shh we’re ignoring the fact that she’s on the reality show too).

She constantly belittles everyone she’s in the ring with, claiming to be the last “real woman” in the goddamn company. (Never mind the fact that she lies, cheats, and steals more than Eddie Guerrero on tax day). Divas division is Mean Girls only with Paige and her henchwomen on top. Paige backstabs, spreads rumors, pits other Divas against each other by spreading lies and fear to make sure there’s no strong #1 contender for her belt.

And around this time, some plucky little girl from San Jose California makes her debut on the main roster.

The Divas division is so ugly at this point that when Bayley comes in, she’s a breath of fresh air. She’s shaking hands before and after matches, fighting clean, and generally slipping above all that backstage BS. The other Divas don’t know if she’s for real but after all of Paige’s negativity, it’s nice to go up against someone who respects her opponents and loves what she does. Cue tearful reunions with (Becky and Charlotte and even Sasha Banks.)

Paige doesn’t know how to handle her because she’s winning clean matches and there seems to be nothing she can do to turn Bayley against the others (or the others against Bayley). After a couple attempts, Bayley ends up starting another revolution just by refusing to kowtow to Paige’s nonsense. The locker room is starting to unite behind her as Bayley fights her way up the ranks….closer and closer to Paige.

There’s a #1 contender’s match during Survivor Series (In Florida Headlining, natch); Bayley vs Nikki Bella in an I Quit Match. Paige has been trying to schmooze Nikki over to her side, offering her anything to take Bayley out and for a while, it seems like Nikki is up for the job. Paige passes Nikki a pair of brass knuckles to tuck into her kneepad and use on Bayley when the time is right. Cue their match in SS where, if all goes well, will be one for the history books. Two incredibly fit, athletic, powerful wrestlers going at it with basically no rules. And no matter what Nikki does to her, Bayley will…not…stay…down. Nothing Nikki can do can make this girl give up and once or twice it looks like she’s reaching in her kneepad for something…but decides against it, fighting the match mostly clean. The end comes when Nikki tries to hit Bayley with a flying knee and Bayley rolls out, causing Nikki to lose by getting the brass knuckles jammed into her own kneecap. Bayley locks her in a Boston Crab and gets the quit.

Then the “Real Women Wrestlers” show up and decide to finish what Nikki couldn’t.

Bayley starts taking a beating from the girls who decide to take out their frustrations on Nikki too. Paige starts doing her whole crazy Paige routine, hitting Bayley with her belt (“THIS IS MINE! YOU’RE NOT TAKING THIS FROM ME! THIS IS MINE!”) when Brie Bella hits the ramp, charging the trio to save her sister and…predictably getting wiped out as the Real Women Wrestlers start pounding on the Bellas and Bayley. KO doesn’t get involved but he keeps the refs from stopping Paige and generally intimidates anyone who tried to interrupt them.

Then the benches just fucking empty.

Every…single…Diva not aligned with Paige shows up at the top of the ramp and just starts slowly making their way to the ring. Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Becky Lynch, Naomi, Tamina, Natalya, Alica Fox, Cameron, Summer Rae; all of them start Terminator walking towards the ring. Paige is now scared, yelling at KO to stop them so KO gets out in the middle of the ramp, holding his hand out and for a moment they all stop just look at him, the biggest, meanest guy on the roster right then. Seth Rollins’ personal enforcer. Intercontinental Champion. Capable of tearing men in half with his bare/bear hands. He is used to people shitting their pants in terror when he enters the room but facing down the Divas roster, he realizes that they are not the slightest bit impressed.

He glances back to Paige and turns around only to eat a Tamina big boot as the Divas charge the ring, clearing house as Paige tries to get away. As she’s backing up, she runs into Nikki Bella who taps her on the shoulder and then lays her out with an elbow the second he turns around. KO is trying to fight his way to the ring but Team BAD is just beating the living hell out of him, not even letting him get to his feet as Seth and Cody hit the ramp, looking down in horror as their Divas picks are getting creamed. They try and rush in to help but they’re getting swarmed like angry bees, trying to defend themselves. Seth spins around, arms flailing blindly as the back of his hand runs right into the side of Bayley’s head as she staggers to her feet.

And everything just…stops.

Seth looks at his hand like it just started oozing black pus as one by one every single Diva turns to face him. Bayley isn’t even hurt that badly but it is clear that Seth has crossed the fucking line. Cody and KO start slowly backing away from the ring, leaving Seth to try and appeal to Bayley’s better nature, trying to say it was an accident (and it was). But no one fucking cares anymore.

All throughout this PPV, the NXT guys have been having a party in a hotel a couple blocks from the event center and we cut to them watching various matches throughout the course of the night, laughing, joking, having a good time. The minute Seth’s hand connects with Bayley’s face, we cut to the NXT party and it is dead…fucking…quiet. Everyone is glaring at the screen in outrage. Baron Gormless Corbin looks like he’s going to turn into a fucking werewolf at any given moment. Enzo Amore’s Coke can is crushed in his hand. Sami Zayn is as red as his hair.

Because people like Bayley.

An unwritten rule of NXT is you don’t fuck with Bayley. You can piss in the Undertaker’s urn, you can burn Bray Wyatt’s chair, you can take a steaming crap in Xavier Woods’ trombone but you do not….fuck…with Bayley.

The camera cuts back to the ring for a moment then cuts back to the NXT party to see everyone is fucking gone.

Back at the Ranch, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose start to go down but Finn Balor holds them both back, shaking his head like they were about to go down to ground zero of a nuclear bomb blast. Seth slowly starts backing away from the Divas roster…then shoves KO and Cody in front of him as he tears up the ramp. Cody and KO follow like Satan himself is chasing him because every Diva with the exception of Bayley and the Bellas are running screaming for his blood.

They chase them backstage.

Cody, poor sweet Cody, trips and Sasha Banks catches up with him, slamming his head into a door as Naomi trips him up and starts putting her flashy sneakers to him. KO hijacks a golf cart and drives it up the ramp, leaving Seth in the dust who just has to keep running.

They chase him out of the building.

They chase him down the block.

They chase him around a corner and the cameras follow him to see him run into the entire NXT roster coming down the street like an angry fucking mob.

Seth freezes as the crew catches sight of him, led by Sami Zayn who leads the charge down the street as Seth legs it as fast as he can, catching up with KO and Cody as their car pulls up beside him. They barely escape with Tamina’s heels busting through a window in the back, Enzo Amore sticking to the hood of the car as they make their getaway, leaving the Divas and the NXT crew standing in the middle of the street.

So Seth’s crew now own everything in the company up to and including general manager Michael Cole’s balls.

No one can stop them; they hunt like a wolf pack and do whatever it takes to keep gold in their hands. Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns have been trying to overthrow them but they can’t seem to find support for their movement. Anyone who is seen talking to them gets KO’d behind the dumpster out back and after a while, the main roster is either too embroiled in their own personal vendettas to want to help or too scared of the Nega-Shield to do anything to stop them.

So the Main Roster babyfaces are either busted or scared…the NXT roster on the other hand-

All throughout this angle, Dean and Roman have been making little blink-and-you-miss-it cameos on NXT. Cameras show them watching matches from the crowds, backstage interview segments occasionally have them in the background talking to superstars 1 on 1. You never really hear what they’re saying but it’s pretty clear they’re asking for backup. NXT Champ Samoa Joe is more interested in dealing with his up and coming challenges so he turns them down, Sami Zayn is getting back into the swing of things, Hideo Itami has a feud going on, everyone seems busy.

(Seth Rollins is being his smug, dismissive self. He doesn’t see anyone from NXT as a threat, completely shits on everyone like they aren’t a real threat. He’s untouchable; says that Dean and Roman could make a deal with the devil and still not be any closer to dethroning him).

Dean Ambrose appears to have lost his mind from frustration at this point. He challenges Seth to a match on RAW and Roman tries to get him to call it off. Predictably, Dean doesn’t listen and he gets set up for a curbstomp through cinderblocks again. Seth’s foot is poised, ready to drive Dean’s head through the cinderblocks and wipe him out like he wiped out Gold Dust…

Lights go out, there’s a crunching sound, lights come back up. Dean Ambrose is just gone. Roman Reigns appears at the top of the ramp and Kevin and Cody rush him leaving Seth alone in the ring. Lights go out again…lights come back up and Roman is gone….and behind Seth in the ring is a tall, lean, masked figure wearing Seth Rollins’ old Shield gear, hood up and face completely obscured.  (http://38.media.tumblr.com/315b06f978e40e736fb51e5731a54fa5/tumblr_inline_n4el9qiTK51rulfug.png)

Seth just about shoots a dookie but before Kevin and Cody can get to the ring, the figure is gone. By the time the lights come back up, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and the masked mystery man are standing in full Shield gear at the top of the ramp, doing the little fist bump thing while Seth has to reckon with the fact that the Shield just reformed without him.

And this is where things go south for Seth leading up to Wrestlemania.

Going up to Hell in a Cell, Seth is trying to play it cool, acting like they grabbed some random idiot to replace him but as the new Shield starts going up against Team Seth (and starts winning) Seth is starting to run a little scared. He’s seeing this weird reflection of him in the bathroom mirror, being haunted by this masked figured all over the place , and getting his ass kicked by this guy who apparently has his old moveset down pat. This mystery man says nothing when interviewed, comes out to Shield music, and anyone who tries to rip his mask off gets the stuffing beat out of him. He goes through Kevin Owens like a hot knife through butter, wrecks Cody Rhodes regularly, and sends Seth running for the first time since he won the belt a second time.

Finally Seth has a total breakdown. He goes out to the ring and starts calling this guy out one on one to fight him, saying he’s not scared and all but elbow-dropping his coat like Flair. The lights cut out and when they come back up the ring is surrounded by dozens of clones of this mystery man, all Seth Rollins cosplayers. Seth starts going around, ripping the masks off and seeing just a bunch of nobodies which drives him even crazier, shoving them around until they start just slowly closing in on him. He gets back into the ring, the lights go out, and the masked man is behind him. Seth bumps into him and starts freaking out. (“You’re not me! You’re not me!”) Seth takes a swing at him, gets headbutted, lasso’d into the corner, where the mystery man is just glaring down at him. Finally, he looks at the Titantron which has the Hell in a Cell screen playing before nodding slowly and disappearing.

So now we’re at Hell in a Cell.

Seth’s main event is vs Mystery Shield Man. KO and Cody are locked into matches with Roman and Dean before the main event so Seth comes down alone, gets into the cell and looks half eager to fight, half scared out of his mind. Shield music hits and Seth looks up the ramp, waiting for the mystery man to show up….only he never does. Music starts again and no mystery man to be found. Seth is raving, calling him out, shaking the cage when the music starts for the third time only to garble out like the track is corrupted.

The entrance video glitches out and shows all the times Seth Rollins ran away or called someone into the ring to fight him, a really off tune version of his main theme playing. This slideshow of Seth Rollins failure ends with Seth Rollins saying over and over again “Dean and Roman could make a deal with the devil and still not be any closer to dethroning me could make a deal with the devil and still not be any closer to dethroning me could make a deal with the devil and still not be any closer to dethroning me deal with the devil deal with the devil. 

“Ðeal with the Devil.”

Lights go out, there’s a low bassline as the mystery figure stands illuminated by a single yellow spotlight at the top of the ramp. The bassline picks up slowly until it sounds like someone’s having a heart attack on mic. And for the first time the mystery man speaks.

Following Team Ambreigns’ defeat at Summerslam, the new power trio of Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, and Cody Rhodes come down to the ring on Monday night to engage in a period of gloating (cue “YOU SOLD OUT” chants flung at Cody Rhodes now). Cody cuts a promo saying he had a choice to ally himself with a couple of washed out losers (Ambreigns) or the next up and coming thing. He says that he was always destined to be part of the future of the WWE and siding with two guys stuck in the past would have only held him back.

Ambrose and Reigns predictably take issue with this and as Seth’s Nega-Shield is walking up the ramp they get ambushed by Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns which leads to a really long, drawn out brawl backstage where the five of them destroy absolutely everything (up to and including Xavier Woods’ trombone). Triple H calls the goon squad out and says that they can’t have any fighting backstage and orders everyone to their corners. Seth is pissed because Reigns and Ambrose attacked them first and Kevin looks like wants to fight still but Hunter puts out a hand to stop him on his chest.

You get a camera shot of Kevin Owens looking down at HHH’s hand, then sloooooooooooowly looking back up at Hunter. Hunter stares him down and Cody and Seth pull Kevin away. HHH later that night says he’s going to make a decision about who (if anyone) is going to be reprimanded for this (he alludes that Dean may need to find a new tag team partner). The time comes for the decision, everyone and Stephanie is in the ring and HHH’s music hits and…nothing. No one comes out. Everyone looks confused for a moment as King of Kings starts up again…and again, nothing.

Stephanie tells a stage hand to go see what’s taking HHH so long and we cut to a camera back stage where HHH’s office looks like a bomb and a wrecking ball had sex in it. Chairs are broken in half, holes in the wall, the lights are busted and its half dark but under the wreckage of a desk is HHH, bloodied and broken. Stephanie screams for the stretcher and is about to charge back up the ramp when she stops, turns around and sloooooowly looks at the five guys behind her who are all looking at each other wondering who’s responsible.

Next week on RAW Stephanie announces that Hunter is in critical condition still so she is leaving to spend time with her family. In the meantime, she’s appointing Michael Cole as interim general manager. Maggle cuts a promo about how he wants business to get back to normal when the nega-Shield comes down to the ring, all smiles and congratulations saying they fully support his new leadership.

So now we have a position where there’s no strong leadership. HHH is out, Kane by then is back to red mask man, Stephanie is with her husband, and Cole now has Seth Rollins stepping on his throat, too paralyzed by fear of these guys to do anything against their wishes.

Cue the slaughter of babyfaces; SCUM 2.0 if you will.

Seth Rollins has the keys to the kingdom and he’s running roughshod over everyone who stands in his way. It becomes pretty clear at this point that Seth is willing to lose a few battles if they can win the war down the road. This is made painfully clear when Gold Dust wants to go toe to toe with Cody again. They’re slated for a match at the next PPV but have the typical preliminary match on Smackdown in which as soon as the bell rings, Kevin Owens just gets into the ring, pushes the ref down, and proceeds to help Cody brutalize his brother. Seth comes out with a cinderblock that he places in the middle of the ring while Kevin and Cody put Gold Dust’s head on the block. Cue summary execution of Gold Dust via Curbstomp through the cinderblock which sends a message to the rest of the locker room (most of which are standing on the top of the ramp looking on as Gold Dust is wheeled out in a neck brace.)

So the reign of terror is upon us and at some point, Team Nega-Shield has all the gold. Seth Rollins is the WWEWHC, Kevin Owens has the US Title, Cody Rhodes has the IC title and the pair of them have the Tag Team Belts which gives Seth’s crew control of everything…except the Women’s Belt. Now you may be asking why Seth Rollins is interested in the Divas division but at this point he’s a young, budding warlord who wants to get his hands on everything. The Divas Division has been the one place he couldn’t touch; what he needs is a bright, ruthless, vicious competitor to ensure he has control over everything.

Cue Paige.  

Now, at this point in the story, Paige is going through a run of bad luck. She’s alone in the Divas division and her efforts to try and pull the belt off Nikki Bella (let’s face it; she’s getting another run) have been met with the usual interference from Brie. So after losing another match, she has a total breakdown backstage, trashing everything and storming out the backdoor. The camera follows her down the street as a car slowly rolls up beside her, window rolling down to show Cody Rhodes in the back seat. He offers her a ride and she gets in the limo.

Riffing on some ideas that @pigeoness​ started throwing around with her own fanbooking angles for Seth Rollins second WWEWHC reign.

So at some point, Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens have a long drawn out feud because KO is a prizefighter and Seth has the biggest prize. They dance around each other leading up to Royal Rumble or something in which KO and Seth have a solid match in which Seth goes over Kevin mostly clean (might hook the shorts to get a pin but otherwise no Authority interference).

Kevin loses and essentially cuts his Mt. Rushmore promo. (“If you can’t beat em, join em. Well I couldn’t beat you so now I got your f[PG-SHOW!]ing back!”) Next Monday, Seth is booked in a match vs Roman or Dean and Kevin Owens shows up out of nowhere to wipe them out while the ref is bumped. Thus begins a long stretch of time in which Kevin Owens is Seth Rollins’ attack dog. If Seth has a match at the end of the show, his opponents get bum rushed backstage and powerbombed through the snack table. Seth starts bumping the refs so Kevin can drag his opponents out of the ring and beat them down in the corner. It’s like J&J except with less running around like clowns at a rodeo and more “Grizzly Bear Kills People on National Television.”

So Seth and Kevin are sitting pretty on the top of the roster when Kevin targets Dean who has either the US or IC championship. Cue great feud and great match in which Kevin comes out with the belt and starts beating Dean Ambrose with it after the match. Roman Reigns rushes the ring and…halfway there gets wiped out by a Seth Rollins superkick, laid out on the ramp while Kevin powerbombs Dean through the Spanish announcer’s desk. Seth and Kevin leave with gold while Dean and Roman quietly seethe.

Cue a long and awesome feud between Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens. They go a couple months fighting back to back PPV matches which leads up to Summerslam.

(Side story: while this has all been going on, we have Stardust and the Power Ranger Villains Ascension feuding with Neville and Gold Dust. We have a proper blow off to the Dust vs Dust angle in which Cody Rhodes finally gets pinned and seemingly overcomes the Stardust persona (yes, it’s cheesy but this whole angle is cheesy). Cody cuts a promo about turning over a new leaf, has a couple of good matches on NXT and seems to be back on the right track. Dean and Roman have gone to him a few times trying to get him on their side but he seems reluctant to get involved with this clusterfuck.)

Cut back to Summerslam and we have Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens. Kevin Owens hulks out and starts really laying into Roman Reigns, getting them disqualified but at this point, after all this feuding, it’s more about putting an end to things. So they’re fighting in the ring after the match, Dean and Seth are on the ropes when suddenly-

YOU’RE ONLY SMOKE AND MIRRORS!

Cody Fucking Rhodes charges the ring, kendo stick in hand ready to kill a motherfucker. Crowd is going nuclear as Kevin and Seth look like they’re ready to shit their pants. Dean, Cody, and Roman start closing in for the kill and Seth is on his knees begging at this point. Cody chokes up on the kendo stick, cranks back gets ready to hit Seth in the face. Seth’s blubbering, pleading face slowly splits into a shit eating grin and Roman realizes what’s going on a split second too late.

Cody spins around and nails Dean Ambrose in the side of the head with the stick. Dean is down. Roman turns, gets ready to charge Cody when Seth trips him up, sending him face first into a Cross Rhodes. Roman’s down. KO is back in the ring and picks up Dean’s body as Cody and Seth get up on either side of him, hoisting him up on KO’s shoulders as  the three of them powerbomb Dean on top of Roman, leaving the two of them wasted and laid out in the ring.
