#false toad

Hoppy New Year: Helmeted water toads are also known as false toads, because most species in this family have parotid glands. The largest frog ever discovered (Magellanic Giant Frog) was a member of this family and existed in the Eocene.

False Toad

What a smile! Here we see the endangered and extremely rare Chile Mountain’s false toad [Telmatobufo venustus]. This species occurs in only two known locations in the regions of Biobio and Maule, Chile. The title of “false toad” refers to this frog’s genus, Telmatobufo, encompassing three Chilean species not of the family Bufonidae. Images by Bert Willaert.

Pseudobufo subasper, the False toad, is a monotypic toad- a species which is the sole known representative of its genus, Pseudobufo. They’re known to favor the swamps and peat marshes of Indonesia and Malasia, as indicated by their webbed feet, a trait not commonly seen in toads. Images by Kodok Raong and Daicus Belabut
