They gave us Austerity.
They gave us Brexit.
They gave us Boris Johnson.
The people of Great Britain triumph again! They voted for Farage and Reform UK in their droves. With unerring skill, the working class are once more placing their faith in those that will only do them harm. But what choice did they have?
Starmer and the Blairite Labour Party have betrayed their trust by attacking pensioners and those on benefits when they should have been taxing the rich. Starmer, a man with no ideology other than “I want to be in power”, and no vision of where he wants the country to be, has been more concerned with accepting freebies – like many in his cabinet - than in looking after the interests of ordinary working people.
Poverty is rife in this country. According to Parliament’s "Poverty in the UK: Statistics", 18% of the population live in ABSOLUTE poverty when housing costs are taken into account. One in five people live in RELATIVE poverty - people living in households with income below 60% of the median in that year.
What has Starmer done for these people? Nothing. In fact he has made things worse.
An extra 50,000 pensioners were driven into relative poverty because of the withdrawal of the winter fuel allowance.
An additional 250,00 vulnerable people will be forced into relative poverty due to Starmer’s cuts to welfare payments.
On the one hand Starmer and his Blairite cronies coo over the 750 free breakfast clubs they are opening in schools, calling it a “game-changing moment" for poor families, while 50,000 additional children will be pushed into relative poverty due to welfare cuts.
Is it any wonder that the working poor are turning to Farage and Reform UK?
Unfortunately, although Farage, like Trump, is very good at identifying and exploiting the plight of poor working families, neither has the solution to these problems. As ordinary working Americans who voted for Trump are finding to their cost, turning to wealthy populist right-wing politicians to help make your life better is akin to turning to a loan shark when you are short of cash: the hidden costs are often so exorbitant you end up worse off than before.
