The young man raised his eyes from a dusty book. They were red and puffy, human, but his brotherās eyes nonetheless.
"Thank you" he said, with the polite gratitude one reserves to strangers.
Lucifer shook his head. āYou seemed in need of a break.ā
"A breakdown is more likely." He smiled and pointed at the empty spot beside his own. "Here, have a sit. Iām David, by the way."
Luciferās heart broke, still he managed to smile back. āLucifer.ā
āLucifer? Did your parents use to burn churches down?ā
"Lucifer is the light bearer. Itās not a bad thing, you know."
He sounded somewhat offended; David smiled again. āWell, you sure enlightened my day.ā He grabbed the cup and took a sip, slow and deliberated. A playful grin on his lips. āAnd you sure as hell arenāt a diabetic. Itās like drinking liquid sugar.ā
"Are you? Diabetic, I mean."
David shook his head and Lucifer immediately knew where this was going, even before the young man opened his mouth. His big brother, always the diligent one.
"Iāll leave you to your books."
He was halfway to standing, when Davidās hand closed on his wrist. His touch was light, warm, just as he remembered.
"Iām sorry" David said. "I donāt wanna sound ungrateful or rude, butā"
"But you really need to study, I understand."
Lucifer smiled and took his leave, but David stalled him again.
"Saturday night, in front of the library. Iām gonna need a beer, however it ends."
Luciferās smile widened. āSee you on Saturday, David.ā
