Fakkelteitgroep ‘VL. 4 Sampler’

The Dutch hiphop scene can at times seem like a rearranging on deck chairs on the same boat; indeed the numerically small scene of Dutch hiphop artists means that everyone knows everyone, and unlike the giant distances between the epicenters of American hiphop, the major cities of the Netherlands can be reached in no more than an hour or two.

I personally feel that this aspect of Nederhop actually works to benefit the art itself; one should think of it like Fairbanks’ local pub league: sure 80% of the participants may be the same from year to year, but with each artist taking turns at the reigns.

This sampler album from the collaborative members of the Fakkelteitgroep is a great example of just that; assorted MC’s and producers collaborate for a great, if somewhat randomly assorted album.

The focus of the album is the universal and uniting nature of hiphop, in its various stylistic sub-genres and chosen subjects matters.  On the opening track, Blues ‘n Blessings, perhaps the volumes strongest, Rico expresses just this when he raps:

“There is a cure-all: 

Tribe’s Midnight Marauders,

the man Muddy Waters,

Dr. Dre’s Chronic, 

medicine cabinet for anything.”
