"Sharp Object" is a song about people who can't accept that they've been victims of violence, and in order to free themselves from the burden of victimhood they project their fears onto you. When someone blames you for the abuse you endured there's a good chance they blame themselves for their own. It's a way to get their agency back, to feel in control. I generally reject the rhetoric of calling yourself a survivor instead of victim (nothing wrong with the word survivor per-se, it's the rejection of the word victim that upsets me), because there's nothing shameful about being a victim. It's the truth, and I'm not ashamed. I don't take it personally anymore, their words don't hurt me anymore, I just wish them to be free from this shame. Don't trust people that speak to you like they know you more than you know yourself.
