off topic for today,, but I just listened to soft spot by keshi and tell me why it's so gewis coded!?!
btw george's new helmet is so gorgeous!! the detail on it is actual INSANE and the shade of blue brings out his eyes
anyway any favorite sea life fact? or favorite sea creature?
I am a horrific music heathen so I had to look up the lyrics and I think there's something super interesting in thinking about the way Lewis and George do sometimes bring out those interesting lost parts of each other- things the other might not consider trying or wanting suddenly becoming well, if you're doing it ive got to follow dont I- especially George-
There's so many things George clearly used to not quite feel comfortable in - fashion acting swimming- where Lewis did it so much George stepped in to follow. I don't think there was much resistance either just an inevitablity
THE HELMET IS SO GORGEOUS I am, perpetually in love with every bit of it, I've saved a truly embarrassing amount of pictures of it. I'm dead proud of him for every bit of it but especially going for sharks over dolphins and the STURGEON oh the sturgeon.
I think I have too many sea life facts to count so when anyone asks me for a few my brain whites out- BUT my default go to is to go with the fact Lobsters don't age!
They produce a special enzyme that allows them to regenerate the caps on their chromosomes called telomeres. telomeres prevent chromosomes from regenerating cells at a certain point- thats how we and most animals age, when our body slowly stops producing the cells we need too stay young. Lobsters? Well they simply continue regenerating as long as they have the energy to do so. Since they grow by 'molting' (climbing out of their shell and making a new one), they can even regrow lost limbs!
This however isn't an infinite life hack or wed have bear sized lobsters everywhere. Molting is an exhausting and time consuming process for all animals that do it- but for lobsters and crustaceans its particularly bad, as they essentially have to grow a new body inside their old body, before they can safely leave the old shell. and the shell isn't just a hollow thing- their mouthes are connected to it. When a Lobster wants to hold it has to regrow a new mouth inside the old shell, and that means for a time they have to stop eating entirely. Molting is not a short process, it can take weeks or even months to complete, and the bigger and older a lobster gets, the thicker and harder that shell becomes, taking even MORE energy to get through, even though the lobster IS regenerating inside.
Eventually, what kills most Lobsters (other than predation/fighting/fishing), is that they simply get too big to molt. either their shell is too thick to break open on their own, or they dont eat enough before to survive the molt, or they just get too tired. Its a bit sad, but it takes them a long long time to get there, thats why they can get massive and live up to 100 years or possibly more!
(this is Jacob Knowles, a favoured follow of mine. if you want more lobster facts or to learn about ethical lobster fishing I recommend following him)
maybe one day we'll figure out how to help lobsters molt and who knows how long they'll live. I hope I get to see that happen
