Lair Coral Snake
Before I was the VFX artist for the PS3 game Lair I was a character modeler. The biggest modeling task I had was the Coral Snake. As you can see in the image above the scale of the asset was extremely large in the world (the player is the man on that tiny dragon).
To keep as much texture resolution as I could I utilized as much tiling and repetition as I could. The head an tail were uniquely textured and the blended into stomach and back tiling textures. One additional requirement for the creature was his back scales could be shot off as part of the boss battle gameplay.
To create all of the unique scales along the back I build a few base scale textures and then duplicated and adjusted the meshes in the low poly. It cause some minor stretching on some of the pieces but was mostly invisible in the final model.
