6 December 1959. The second McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II (XF4H-1) Build Number 142260 performed a zoom climb to a world record of 98,560 ft. during operation Top Flight. The pilot was Commander Lawrence E. Flint, Jr., U.S. Navy.

The propensity to spin and techniques for recovery of the McDonnell F4H-1 Phantom II, we investigated at the request of @USNavy by @NASA, in 1959-60. As well as spinning tunnel tests, free-flight drop models were carried aloft at West Point by helicopter. 1/4
