i am doing it again, folks. if you know about trick-or-treating with me you know the ropes already. if you don't, here's the thing.
i have done this off and on for, like, 11 years or something. i dunno. time is an illusion and i do not have the proper skill line unlocked to control it. anywho.
for the month of October come trick-or-treat in my inbox.
send me an ask that says 'trick-or-treat' in some form or another. if you want me to write a short spooky thing - a trick or a treat that the fates will decide for us - for you (which i love doing) make sure to include a fandom or some characters. otherwise i'll just give you a something random in return. (might be a pic, might be a song rec, might be a few lines of a poem. who knows?)
the point is for the month of October y'all can come trick-or-treating in my asks. come get some engagement. provide some enrichment for a creative soul to gnaw on.

At eleven I hated brushing my hair. Ā It was always a tangled mess because it was thick and long I was always running around outside with it in a ponytail. Ā At eleven I was still a wild child. Ā I always found the misfits, the kids shunned by their peers for being weird, and protected them fiercely. Ā Learned at an early age how uncertain forever is so I took and I took and I took.
At eleven I sat down in class. Ā Alphabetical. Ā Second to last desk in the back right corner of the room.
He sat behind me. Ā A quiet presence.
He spoke quietly. Ā He moved quietly. Ā He existed quietly.
I brushed my hair for the first time in who knows how long. Ā Because I hated knowing he sat there everyday with my ratās nest of a ponytail in front of him.
I donāt remember first words or first smiles or first anything. Ā Just that he was there. Ā And he would talk quietly. Ā And he would smile.
I just wanted to be one of the reasons he smiled.
The next couple years I didnāt see him as much. Ā We didnāt have many classes together. Ā I kept my hair brushed. Ā I kept an eye out for his smile. Ā I fell in like with boys who were quiet and kind.
At fourteen the boys I had fallen in like with all liked me back. Ā The girls didnāt like that. Ā The girls were jealous that I was friends with the boys. Ā (Most of them. Ā The ācuteā ones and the āstrongā ones and the āpopularā ones. Ā They cared less about the āfunnyā ones and the āsmartā ones unless they were ācuteā or āstrongā or āpopularā too. Ā At fourteen I still found the misfits and collected them around me. Ā He did too. Ā Just. Ā Quietly. Ā We would have done anything for him.)
At fourteen our seats werenāt alphabetical anymore. Ā But we still sat near each other in classes. Ā Right side of the room. Ā Back corner. Ā It was our corner. Ā Him and me and select few mutual friends. Ā It was an honor to sit there. Ā In other classes, in between classes, at lunch I flitted around from group to group. Ā But I always came back to him. Ā We all did.
I turned fifteen and the day after so did he. Ā He always seemed to care little that it was his birthday and more that it wasnāt mine anymore. Ā More about me and less about him. Ā Quiet. Ā Like always.
At sixteen I noticed his hands. Ā He was always writing. Ā He never let me read it but he would let me sit next to him and watch him and he would look at me with raised brows expecting⦠I still donāt know what.
At sixteen I noticed his cheeks were always a bit flushed. Ā His smile would turn mischievous when heād meet my eyes. Ā Heād lean over to say the most ridiculous things to me in that quiet voice and smile a little more when Iād try to stifle a laugh. Ā We didnāt have our corner in classes anymore. Ā But weād still drift together. Ā And in classes we didnāt share I would drift towards our mutual friends more than any other friends of mine.
At sixteen I was one of the only girls to be friends with the boys. Ā With these boys. Ā With my boys. Ā (With him.)
I turned seventeen and the next day so did he. Ā We argued which one of us the Thanksgiving break was for since we got a half day on his birthday. Ā We both knew the answer but we argued anyway. Ā (It was him. Ā Heās always been something Iām thankful for.)
At seventeen I lost a friend, lost a decade long friendship, because of him. Ā He wasnāt the cause of it. Ā He was just the final straw. Ā She hated that I was such good friends with him. Ā I was always around him. Ā I was distracting him. Ā I was ruining her chances with him. Ā She was jealous and acidic and I never told him any of it for years. Ā I let her ātake her chancesā with him. Ā I was still the one who he sat next to. Ā The one heād raise his brows at and smile mischievously at. Ā (I let her keep another friend, another person I loved dearly who always chose her over me. Ā But I kept him. Ā He chose me.)
Sometimes I hated that smiling genius. Ā I once watched him make an entire presentation in five minutes before class and get an A on it. Ā And when he finished he sat down and smiled at me and quietly said ātold you I could do itā and didnāt look away until I told him that he was right.
Seventeen rolled into eighteen and he was right there with me. Ā He stole my notes in class. Ā Drew pictures on them, took up entire pages in my notebook. Ā He left comments, criticism. Ā He hunched over his own notebook and raised his brows when I would try to take it. Ā Heād hand it over only when I promised not to look at what he was working on. Ā Iād leave dumb messages in his notebook for him to find. Ā When he did heād snatch my notebooks back and take his vengeance.
At eighteen we graduated. Ā Alphabetical order. Ā He was one person away from me in the graduation ceremony. Ā We rolled our eyes at each other over all the ceremony and the hoopla surrounding it. Ā At one of our mutual friendās graduation party I asked for a picture. Ā Said friend joked that he hadnāt taken a picture with anyone. Ā He didnāt like pictures. Ā He refused everyone.
And he did refuse. Ā I asked and looked up at him and he said no. Ā I frowned and looked up at him some more and he looked back. Ā Raised his eyebrows at me and then gave me that quiet smile. Ā Itās still one of my favorite pictures out of all my graduation party pictures.
At twenty-four I got married. Ā Thought I was in love. Ā (Maybe I was. Ā But he definitely wasnāt.) Ā
At twenty-six I was separated. Ā
Barely a year later, at twenty-seven, he added me on Facebook, that boy I sat in front of, and we spoke for the first time in nine years. Ā
It was like we had never stopped. Ā The jokes. Ā The puns. Ā First message I sent him I joked about how I had just been thinking about him and he responded with a joke about how he already knew thanks to his psychic powers. Ā It was like always. Ā Quiet. Ā I could see his raised brows and little smile as I read his messages. Ā We shared little bits and pieces of ourselves. Ā More jokes. Ā More puns. Ā More quiet moments. Ā We didnāt message every day. Ā Sometimes it would be a couple months. Ā But every time it was like we had never stopped.
At twenty-eight I went to our class reunion. Ā He didnāt. Ā When I told him how bored I was and how much I missed him he spent the whole night messaging me and keeping me company with his wit and charm. Ā His silly jokes and that quiet smile I could easily see in my mind.
At twenty-nine I got a message from someone from our graduating class while I was at work. Ā
He had died in a car accident. Ā
It had to be a joke. Ā A horrible joke. Ā No way was he gone. Ā He was too smart, too kind, too quietly amazing to just be gone like that. Ā The rest of the night at work my head was filled with a blizzard of nothingness. Ā I would never see his smile again. Ā Never hear his quiet laugh. Ā See him raise his brows at me and give me that indulgent look. Ā Never hear or read one of his ridiculous jokes again.
I turned thirty and the next day⦠he didnāt.
At eleven I sat down in front of a boy. Ā
At twenty-nine I (and the whole world) lost him.
At thirty-four I woke up from a dream of him, with his quiet laughter and his silly jokes and flushed cheeks and raised eyebrows, and realized that I loved him. Ā That Iāve always loved him. Ā Not fanciful fairy tale falling in love blushing smiles and sparkling eyes. Ā But soul deep knowing that he was always there, that years and miles apart would never change how we were together, love.
At eleven I was untamed. Ā All tangled hair and wild eyes. Ā Fierce and feral and that fine line between them. Ā I was noise and energy. Ā He⦠wasnāt. Ā He was quiet and careful and wide eyes and flushed cheeks. Ā He was fierce, yes, but not feral. Ā Always confident, always himself. Ā And he let me in. Ā Drew me close. Ā Shared smiles and laughter. Ā Chose me above others. Ā And I loved him for it. Ā For every moment that I would look over at him and he was looking back.
At eleven I sat down in front of a boy and fell in love. Ā I never told him, I never even realized it myself really, but looking back I like to think he knew. Ā That every smile, every whispered joke, every stolen notebook, every raised brow, every stupid pun at eleven at night was him loving me too.
At eleven I fell in love, gave my heart to a quiet boy with flushed cheeks curled over a notebook, and was never the same again.
