The Eye of Minds: James Dashner
2 stars, 5 out of 10. My feelings about this book are way too mixed. I might want to add that I hurriedly sped through this book because it was the last one to count for my reading competition (more information about that on tumblr). Iām aware itās James Dashnerās newest book, and youāre supposed to be a better writer the more you write. The friend that lent me the book said it was 9 out of 10 and just amazing. Then one of the bloggers I follow said it was pretty mediocre. I just donāt know what to rate this book, or what to say. Compared to the Maze Runner, it was on par in some aspects and not in others. Soā¦ I suppose I should get onto the review.
The very concept of āThe Eye of Mindsā is actually quite creative and cool. I mean who doesnāt want to escape from the confines of regular, boring life to go to a virtual universe where anything is possible?
My problem is that James Dashner doesnāt follow through with the concept. Yes, he did describe the VirtNet, but it wasnāt enough. The same thing happened with the characters. I thought Thomas and Teresa were the two worst characters ever. In both the setting and characters, he told us, the readers everything instead of showing like my Language Arts teacher loves to stress. They were wooden puppets. Besides the initial introduction to their places in the storyline, with a few physical details, the characters from āThe Eye of Mindsā are wooden puppets. I donāt know anything about Sarah, Michael, or Kaine. To prove how much the characterās are not memorable, answer this question: Who is the other guy? Thereās Sarah, and Michael and the other member of the trio that is so unimportant and non-descriptive that I have forgotten his name.
The whole thing about the game that the trio went through that was āadults onlyā was awesome. The fact that the characters kept dying and then just having to try again showed how much persistence they had. Michael can be brave, some might even say courageous. Heās loyal to his friends, and fighter. They are also dedicated to their duties.
Now the ending of the book was freaking awesome. Sarah, and the other guy (whose name I honestly canāt remember) in VirtNet, so itās only Micheal left to face Kaine. For people that havenāt read the book, there is a humongous plot twist I never would have guessed in a million years.
I know this review was really short and probably lacking, but I had such mixed feelings about it that I truly couldnāt tell you my opinion. The plot was good, and the characterās had some good qualities, but the setting and description lacked. Soā¦ tell me what you thought about it.
