Cataracts usually develop over time (though it can be relatively quick, but still, not instantaneously), so if he had been getting regular annual appointments, the eye doctors would know these are forming. Cataracts happen when proteins start breaking down in the eye's natural lens, and it's very common. The surgery that happens to fix it is a very quick easy surgery where the doctor takes out the natural lens and replaces it with an artificial one (which is also cool bc it means you could potentially have a much better prescription after this surgery (disclaimer tho, you'll still probably need glasses of some sort tho but it kinda depends on what lens you get put in.))

Also, from my understanding, and I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure cataracts can cause kinda cloudy vision but also discoloration of the world. Everything might look kinda brownish. Also I think, I Think, that the cloudy vision could very possibly be in like a spot of your vision and gradually grow bigger. It's not like your all over vision just gets blurry randomly.

So this is all very weird drama bc it would not take a year to schedule this appointment. And resources should be fairly readily available for it too, even considering it's Thailand and not the US where I am.

Also for expenses, I googled this, but it would be $3,000-7,000 USD per eye here, but only $1,200- $3000 USD per eye there (or 40,000-100,000 THB). (That's without insurance though, and I have no idea if this family would realistically have insurance/healthcare or if they did what that would look like as for financial help.) So basically. Around the amount of money they already lost to a scammer.
