It's been a year since Calamity aired, and I still have not been able to stop thinking about it. This was drawn referencing Michelangelo's Pietà, as a spiritual successor to the Creation of Adam redraw I did when the finale first aired.

Asmodeus, Lord of the Hells, Father of lies, and a fixer upper
@criticalrole
We came here to make something. And then, one of our puppets, one of our foolish paper dolls mattered so much to them that they threw us into the pit. You think that my quarrel is with them? No. All of you did something to them. You made them turn their back on us.
-- Asmodeus, EXU Calamity episode 4
The thing is, even allowing for a lot of perspective happening right there accompanied by even more deliberate slant, I don't know that this statement is... factually inaccurate, exactly. I mean, maybe it's just extremely obvious that I've read Small Gods like SO many times, but I feel like there's room in there for some level of... yeah, something changed when mortals got involved, and it changed specifically because of the nature of their belief. I mean, look at Artagan, and that was just one unusually shiny adolescent girl.
(I will also be needing Luis to go ahead and release the absolute fucking full formal dissertation on Zerxus's personal cosmology which I just assume he has in his text history somewhere, along with any GM notes he received thereupon before starting play. MAN there was a lot there, but he was doing such a brilliant job of staying with the character -- Zerxus has this very deep and obsessively complex frame of reference that's second nature to him but has almost never come up in conversation ever in his life. It's incredibly hard to just step back, let a character like that drop absolutely wild conclusions with no explanation whatsoever, and avoid the temptation to make sure everyone understands how clever you are for coming up with it all.)
I think one of the things that I absolutely LOVE about Zerxus is that even when he was proven WRONG, he still choose to believe. Even when Asmodeus thows his offer of redemption back in his face, he still held onto the hope that redemption was possible.
If Zerxus had let go of his beliefs and let's be honest hubris,he wouldn't have been able to redeem Vespis, which gave him the time to not only save his friends from death but to also see and say goodbye to his son.
This belief in redemption and second chances is also the reason why he decided to reject the opportunity Nydas gave him of an afterlife with Evandrin and his son. Because if redemption was possible for Vespin (Which played a big part in preventing the Calamity from turning into an extinction event) then it is possible for Evandrin to find a way to save his soul from Asmodeus.
Also it would be a massive fuck you to the literal Lord of the Nine Hells, to have his soul saved by his husband and show that redemption is possible.
The nice thing about fiction is I can make any mistakes I want to so I choose to believe in the potential for good in everyone. And if I feel the pain of betrayal in the end, I'll have a nice cathartic cry about it.

Ok so this is a exu theory that I haven't seen anyone talking on yet in re to zerxes and Asmodeus.
I see lots of people saying that Asmodeus is playing zerxus like a fiddle or that zerxes is having a "I can fix him" moment, but I haven't seen anyone saying that maybe zerxus is giving Asmodeus what he wants cause he sees no other way.
Friends close and enemies closer, if he's been having these dreams for a while then maybe he has some insite. Also I'd be pissed off if a demon of lies wore my lovers face and tried to sell me a sob story. Maybe zerxus is angry and, it's probably stupid lying to the demon lord of lies but, what if he thinks there is no other way, and is trying to get close to him so he can find a weak point.
I feel like even tho he's very trusting, zerxus is also a smart guy and isn't the first knight of avaler for nothing. But also huberus is a big thing in this story so I could be wrong. This is just another angle i haven't seen bought up yet.
