Captain Marvel (spoilers?)
You know what, I do not fucking get the people complaining that Brie Larson “needs to smile” or show “emotion” in her expressions and said her acting was monotone and one set face. I watched the movie, she fucking smiles a lot. She even cracks jokes a lot (it is part of her character, and a freaking common remark from other characters, that she is a jokester. Though she usually deadpans it, with a slight upturn of a smile and a cheeky look in her eyes, like the straight guy in a comedy routine. She is pretty much constantly doing it). No, not all of her smiles go ear-to-ear, most are small upturns at the corner of her lips as she drops a cheeky remark. But there is a range, it was not the flat one-look potato that I was expecting from all the critiques on it going around.
It was fine, there was emotion and fuck it not every woman grins ear-to-ear constantly when they are happy and or being funny! She reminded me of quite a few of my friends, and myself, in her facial range — normal. And I mean, I have watched a lot of movies and as a lead her facial expression range is not unusual for action leads. A lot of the action-rambos only have one expression -crazed mcserious I’m going to fight and yell a lot - so critiquing a character for not smiling more or having a kaleidoscope of expressions seems pretty petty in an action movie.
I enjoyed her character. I enjoyed her acting - she felt like a normal person in a unreal situation, funny and cheeky and i have seen people behave like the character did in the real world. I mean, her expression range not the other stuff.
