Is The Galaxy S8 Safe From Exploding Batteries?
One of the burning questions for Samsung after its official unveiling of its next flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, is whether the devices will be safer than the potentially explosive Galaxy Note 7.
It can be remembered that the Galaxy Note 7 had a massively successful launch, but the smartphone was ultimately doomed by manufacturing issues that caused some Galaxy Note 7 batteries to explode and catch fire. After a pair of recalls, Samsung decided to permanently pull the plug on the controversial device.
Samsung made sure that no such thing will happen with the Galaxy S8, as the company looks to rebound from the embarrassing Galaxy Note 7 debacle.
Samsung Implements New Safety Standards For Galaxy S8
Samsung decided to formulate and implement a variety of new safety standards for the production of the Galaxy S8, as the company was found to have certain shortcomings in its testing process for the Galaxy Note 7.
As reported by The Verge’s Dan Seifert, Samsung has greatly expanded the testing process of the batteries that it will use for the Galaxy S8. The company now has an eight-point checklist for inspecting batteries, and while suppliers do most of the testing, Samsung duplicates the tests to act as another measure in detecting and identifying potential issues.
The company also now has what is called an Accelerated Usage Test, which is made to simulate the normal usage patterns of customers over time. The test includes what the batteries of smartphones typically and possibly go through, including charges, discharges, exposure to water, and the like. The tests are carried out by dozens of employees on 100,000 devices to make sure that there are no issues.

It was also reported by CNET’s Shara Tibken that during testing, if a battery turns out to be defective, the entire lot which included that specific battery would be returned to the supplier. In some cases, the number of batteries in such batches reach as many as 15,000 units.
Samsung Makes Changes To Galaxy S8
The development of the Galaxy S8 was almost finished when reports of exploding batteries started coming in for the Galaxy Note 7. This prompted the company to backtrack and make changes to the batteries of the Galaxy S8.
Samsung decided to lower the battery capacity of the Galaxy S8 to 3,000 mAh and that of the Galaxy S8 Plus to 3,500 mAh, both of which are downgrades compared to the 3,600 mAh battery found in the Galaxy S7 edge released last year. However, despite the lower battery capacities, Samsung claims that the smartphones will last longer on a single charge with the help of energy management software in the Galaxy S8, along with other adjustments that the company made.
Samsung also focused on improving the durability of the Galaxy S8 battery to allow it to remain potent even after hundreds of charging cycles. In fact, after six months to one year of usage, the Galaxy S8 will turn out to have a better battery life than its predecessor, and will continue to better hold a charge after two years.
With these changes, Samsung is hoping that it would be able to get customers to forget about the Galaxy Note 7 quicker, and instead focus on a more powerful, and safer, Galaxy S8. Source : techtimes

- Wrong Charger
Do NOT use the wrong charger to charge your batteries. The maximum charge for most 18650 batteries should be 4.20v.
- Reverse Polarity
Make sure the + and - signs are inserted the correct way, do NOT force the battery in.
- Short Circuit
Do NOT connect the + and - terminals with conductive metals. Keep batteries out of your pockets and handbags where keys etc could cause a potential hazard.
Deformation Of The Battery
Do NOT use your batteries if the wrap is damaged in anyway. Do NOT use if the battery shows any physical signs of fault / damage. A rusty battery is extremely dangerous. Dispose of the battery if there is an abnormal smell, discharge or discoloration from the battery.
Do NOT peel the wrapper off your battery, it is there for your protection. If your battery is showing signs that the wrapper is peeling either get your battery re-wrapped or dispose of safely.
Charging Your 18650 Battery
Do NOT leave your batteries on charge when you go out or go to bed.
Do NOT charge your batteries close to any flammable liquids or materials.
Storing Your Batteries
Please store unused batteries in their original box. Dont not leave next to a microwave / kettle.
Mixing Batteries
Do NOT use batteries with other batteries unless you intend to use them together constantly.
Disposal of your battery
Battery disposal is extremely important. Please dispose off your batteries in the designated battery disposal point or take back to your local retailer to dispose of safely.

Because of this requirement lithium ion batteries are the best choice. We all need to respect the amount of energy in these batteries. But are they safe? We all hear about the occasional incident where a battery fails in a violent way. This is caused by a short circuit within the cell or if stacked cells are used, one cell can discharge into the other with high discharge rates when one cell depletes its energy before the other. A mild short will only cause an elevated self-discharge. Little heat is generated because the discharging energy is very low. If, however, for whatever reason any of the following conditions happens; 1. Internal short circuit 2. Excess external charge current 3. Excess external discharge current 4. Environment conditions The temperature can rise to the point where thermal runaway can happen that results in 'venting with flame.' There are two basic types of lithium-ion chemistries: cobalt and manganese (spinel). Typical battery chemistry mixes are cobalt, nickel, manganese and iron phosphate. Lithium-ion cells with cobalt cathodes should never rise above 130°C (265°F). At 150°C (302°F) the cell becomes thermally unstable, a condition that can lead to a thermal runaway in which flaming gases are vented. To achieve maximum runtime, cell phones, digital cameras and laptops use cobalt-based lithium-ion. Because of the lower temperature whereby the cell becomes thermally unstable, electronic protection circuits are added. Manganese is the newer of the two chemistries and offers superior thermal stability. It can sustain temperatures of up to 250°C (482°F) before becoming unstable. In addition, manganese has a very low internal resistance and can deliver high current on demand. It is these two features that make this battery the best choice for use in the ProVari. The drawback of spinel is lower energy density. Typically, a cell made of a pure manganese cathode provides only about half the capacity of cobalt. The higher inherent safety of the spinel system permits the exclusion of the electric circuit in the battery. In the ProVape eCigs we incorporate the protection circuit into the eCig thus providing an added layer of safety. We know of NO safer combination then to use the manganese lithium ion battery with the ProVape eCig. The AW IMR type cells that use the manganese chemistry are the safest of the lithium chemistry types. The higher capacity cells use the cobalt chemistry with the electronic protection circuit. The ultimate in safety is to have multiple redundant safety layers whereby if one layer of safety fails the other layer prevents an unsafe condition. This is what we strive for at ProVape, even if it means more internal components with its associated higher cost. Asia produces many non-brand replacement batteries that are popular with users because of low price. Many of these batteries don't provide the same high safety standard as the main brand equivalent. In spite of the good record, its safety is a hot topic that gets high media attention whenever an incident occurs.
