Pulp Saturday goes back to the Sleazy Seventies with The Man from Charisma (1970) by Ted Mark, author of smut James Bond-spoof The Man from O.R.G.Y.

A handsome spy beds every woman he meets (in detail) and incidentally travels the globe and engages in espionage and derring-do.

HE SWUNG THE fireplace poker around, testing it’s weight. practiced movements, elegant swings & sharp footwork. a smile, razor-thin & testing, crossed his features.

well, this bit isn’t so much headcanon as it is straight up canon, but HOSPITALS ARE THE BIGGEST TRIGGER FOR NATE.  they give him literal flashbacks to his son’s death ( in a hospital ).  between the overwhelmingly sterile smell, the contrast of too-loud beeping with too-hushed voices, the off-white hallways that look the same in every institution… he can’t handle it.  we see it first in 1x05  “ the miracle job ” when nate goes to visit fr. paul:

pa system: code blue. pediatrics. code blue.( people go running down the hallway )paul: i know hospitals are tough for you.nate: paul, have you tried legal action ?  i mean, maybe an injunction –

topic change back to the business at hand ; this is a classic move from nate whenever he gets deeply uncomfortable.  it’s no coincidence that he’s so grandiose for the rest of this episode, that he drinks so much, that the con is so risky.  hospitals freak him the hell out.

2x03 “ the order 23 job ”  also offers a really good perspective on this.  ( for those of you not as fluent in the leverage episodes :  this is the episode where nate and company run a con in a hospital ;  nate, in fact, plays a doctor. ) parker refers to him as SADISTIC in this episode.  the lengths that he goes to make the con work are gruesom – downright grotesque – as opposed to the clean and clever way he usually conducts business.  the setting of the con is no coincidence here.

then we also have 2x14  “ the three strikes job ”  in which we literally have nate having a flashback to his son’s death while he’s visiting bonanno in the hospital.  he speaks to bonanno’s wife, and as he turns to leave, he sees their young son, and boom.  which, yes, kids in trauma are definitely a trigger of their own for nate but the combination of that plus hospital setting makes it all the worse for him.

   “So when everyone’s precious Avengers want to rough someone up, they’re heroes, but when I get in a fight on my own free time I’m ‘RECKLESS’ and ‘IRRESPONSIBLE’?”   --- It’s not clear whom she’s been arguing with, but from the looks of things   ( arms folded over her chest, eyebrows arched )  she’s still in the and another thing stage.
