Experiment Spotlights: Hammerface
Second experiment, let’s go:
Another one of the experiments introduced in “Dupe”, Hammerface stood out among the group as its only 0-series, and is arguably the most popular of the four. He appears a fair amount of times in the franchise afterwards and lands himself several cameos across multiple iterations, notably the anime and several of Disney’s Lilo and Stitch games. In the original series, he mostly functioned as a sort of experiment audience surrogate due to his reactions to many of the situations he wound up in, though this role was discarded by the time of the anime. Generally he was there to show off experiment relationships, often being seen with older series and helping out later ones-something he ended up extending to Lilo and Stitch in one notable instance. Being created to maintain Jumba’s lab, Hammerface is in the background, though still winds up one of the more notable experiments due to his appearances throughout the franchise.
Hammerface’s design is similar to Heat’s in that he’s a bizarrely proportioned Stitch-like experiment, only the “Stitch” part is near completely hidden thanks to his head and tail. Hammerface’s head is self-explanatory, with his spiked tail giving him the overall appearance of a T-Rex. It’s a creative design, though in-universe he suffers from the same problems as Heat and other similar experiments; being slow and in his case, having a sort of blind spot due to his nose. His design is very plain aside from his head, even being a dull blue-gray in comparison to many experiments. Ironically, said dull appearance serves as an interesting contrast to them and makes Hammerface stand out regardless, so it’s a good design overall.
In terms of powers, Hammerface has nothing much to speak of; he simply has super strength and durability to help in his main function-pounding in nails and fixing Jumba’s lab and home. However, the experiment himself is incredibly skilled with these abilities and can even hold his own against Stitch. He has a good grasp of his weaknesses and can easily best other experiments (and Pleakley in one anime short), making him a dangerous 0-series in much the same way as Felix and Frenchfry; he’s weak by comparison to later series, but more than makes up for it with experience and skill.
Hammerface appears in “The Asteroid”, “Dupe”, “Woops”, and “Snafu”, and has cameos in “Stitch! The Movie”, “Remmy”, and “Snooty”. Funnily enough, his computer image also appears in the intro to the series as part of the background. He also features in the anime episode “Link-Age” and Kung Fu Dragon Pleakley short. Generally, his character is one of the more uptight of the experiments, often being upset by both hyper experiments like Sparky and many of the situations he finds himself in. Despite this, he seems to take charge of and help out later series such as the other three in “Dupe” as well as Lilo and Stitch themselves (i.e “The Asteroid”). A lot can be inferred from Hammerface’s appearances and cameos, making him an interesting character and 0-series.
Another character ultimately thrown to the side, though definitely one of the more developed experiments in terms of personality. There’s a lot implied about Hammerface’s character and relationships, which makes him an easy experiment to work with in fanon. Overall, solid design and an interesting character.
