Oh oh speaking of Lockheed, have you seen NOAA's WP-3D Orion? This isn't really a question about planes, per say, I just think a turbo-prop specialized to fly into hurricanes is really cool.

Ooh... very interesting. Most of my knowledge regarding planes is jet era forwards, so I was not really familiar!
After a cursory look through, I think I agree with you about Newfoundland. The fact that there were documented witnesses who wrote about the sighting in the paper without actually knowing that there was a missing flight indicates to me that they're probably reliable. On the other hand, all the evidence about Maine seems like it was gathered far after the actual event and with many witnesses who had already heard about the flight. Plus... well, it isn't impossible for a small plane to crash in the woods in Maine without anybody finding anything, but it feels like 100 years and all the development that's happened since then would lead to SOMEBODY stumbling on it if it crashed on land.
