Workers remove trees and brush near the Interstate 91 Exit 19 off-ramp, Monday, June 3, 2019 where work has begun on a roundabout that will replace traffic lights at the intersection of the off ramp, Bridge Street, Damon Road and the Coolidge Bridge.

When the project is complete, it will set the stage for continued upgrades to both the Route 9 corridor from the Coolidge Bridge east to the Hampshire and Mountain Farms malls in Hadley and for the length of Damon Road to King Street in Northampton.”

Exit 19 is a desert.

Your car is out of fuel on a long stretch of highway; nothing but road and verge as far as the eye can see. Expanses of orange in every direction. You walk.

You walk towards vague shapes on horizons; windmills, trees, lights. Each nets a sharp cut to poetic text, and then a colour shift. Orange fades to red and then down through blues and purples to darkness, cut only by torchlight that seems to show shapes in staticy sand.
