I was about 15 minutes into the movie when I started saying "wow, the framing of these shots and the editing is very careful and considered in spite of the clumsy dialogue and stiff acting." And then the really heavy-handed anal sex allegory kicked in and I was like "Oh This is very funny" And I started really enjoying the thematic aspect of it. That feeling of using games and roleplay to explore new sensations (foreign cuisine scene) or scary stuff (the violence and relived fear from an assault) and the feeling of getting so lost that you lose that separation of game and real life and you are just actually scaring yourself (when the game pod gets blasted with an smg).
having the characters talk about how mismatched the elements of the story were really did connect the dots on how deep in "the simulation" we were and foreshadowed the ending pretty well. I can't believe a character yelling with a distincly different accent than normal was Plot Relevant. Really just a delightful little piece if you want to think about HOW we tell and perform stories and what purposes they can serve and, oh yeah, let your girlfriend peg you.
