Where the tightly coupled Rationalist Model values control and the production of predicted outcomes, the Emergence Model values ‘‘generativity’’—the capacity for generating surprising and interesting emergent properties such as insights, attitudes, concepts, or ways of being that in principle could not have been anticipated by the designers of the exhibition. ...Rather than seeking to become tightly coupled around a common goal, the visitor and the museum seek a loosely coupled encounter serving interests that overlap rather than coincide.
-Jay Rounds on the limits of logic models, The Museum and Its Relationships as a Loosely Coupled System
Pitfall #1: Focus on the Deliverable, not on the Learning
Pitfall #2: Too Much Converging; Not Enough Diverging When diverging, the team doesn’t settle on a single design idea. Instead, they ask how else they could solve problem, trying as many ideas as they can.
Pitfall #3: Working in the Wrong Fidelity
Pitfall #4: Too Little Evaluating The best teams know how they’ll evaluate the prototype before they build it. This helps them pick the right fidelity for the iteration, getting them quickly to the best results.
Pitfall #5: Fixating On A Single Prototyping Tool
Materiality in Museums
All exhibitions could experiment with multi-sensory stimulation and give the visitor things to touch and experiment with. Put straight jackets in the psychiatry exhibition and scarificators in Balance and Metabolism – that click sound brings home the reality of blood letting in extremely visceral ways, deepening the texts. Invite the visitors to swallow pills while hearing about the chemical body. Let visitors bite down on a rubber mouth piece while hearing about electroshock therapy. Give them gene chips and laboratory equipment. Take seriously that medicine is performed on the body and experienced by it.Â

This is something beyond "interactivity"--something that I think is deeper and more significant for visitors and for museums. Ultimately, the goal of exhibit developers and designers is to create the potential for a transformative experience.Â
Exhibiting Skills: Exhibition Development for Informal Educators Beverly Serrell, Kitty Connolly, and Rachel Vourlas Schacht Huntington Botanical Gardens
Join the Huntington’s award-winning exhibition team for the fourth of five intensive workshops on the fundamentals of developing botanical exhibits. Be one of ten participants from a broad range of experiences and backgrounds to spend a week learning and working in a team-oriented setting surrounded by 120 acres of gardens. From concept through evaluation, you will develop unfacilitated and interactive prototypes of living plant exhibits.
