Exercise One: Reflection
Our exercise one film, Hands Where I Can See Em tells the story of a woman who's assaulted by shadow puppets until she is forced to confront the shadows in a Western-style duel.
This Western idea came from my inspirations in pre-production, mainly a shadow silhouette in No Country For Old Men and other modern Westerns like Killer Joe.
Overall, I think the film was successful from the perspective of D.P. although on reflection there are some things that I would have changed.
For instance, the silhouettes didn't end up as clean as I wanted. This is partially because we didn't prepare enough for the shoot and because we didn't adapt from script to screen enough. For the next exercise and other projects moving forward, I've asked for a prep day to be included so that I can go through the shot list with Sophie and any kinks can be worked out.
Another criticism of the exercise was an oversaturation in the lighting set-up which is a result of using tungsten lamps and motivating with tungsten dedos. I'm going to take this onboard for the next exercise, adding other colours to the light and potentially getting a gaffer on board to bounce ideas off.
