The horrible realization that Alastor's horribly conditioned special cell would have actually been NICER than what others would have gotten in solitary at the time... because they would have only a couple thin blankets directly on the floor, and not even a metal cot to sleep on. And this is, of course, without windows in the cells, during the heat, and with bugs and other filth to contend with...
I found out so much about the prison system and how bad things were, thanks to this fic, and the media especially in the US does such a crazy job covering up the worst of it, and even making people believe that the poor conditions were a good thing. There were some pre-Code films and also human's rights groups at the time that were fighting for public change, but it took many years to improve the system, and even now, we have a long way to go...
I'll likely touch on prison life a lot more in following chapters, but for now the arc is focused more on the legal and media side of things as I introduce Vincent's role in Alastor's story. It's seriously a challenge to work on this, but very worth it, so I hope to do this story justice!

This is the cover image I have, although I might redo it one day, when I have a better idea of the whole story. The camera pictured is actually an Iconoscope TV broadcast camera, but as of now, the fic is taking place mainly in 1933, with some plans for it to scale until the 1940s and onward, later. I am not a planner, when it comes to writing, and so my outlines never quite match the final drafts, haha.
In terms of the chain, I know that Alastor usually is depicted with a leash, rather than a chain, but this is a Prison AU, and I am taking some divergences there. The leash will still be a leash, I'm just. Thinking. x"D (Also I realized it was a leash after drawing this, but wanted to keep it, so I'm keeping it at least in the concept artwork LOL. I will regret it forever and ever, but at least I can move on and draw something else oops.) Lastly, I know that Vox's Wifi symbol would not have existed in 1933, of course. But I wanted to be silly and tie things to his Hell powers in the future, so I thought: why not!
Do give the fic a chance if you enjoy intense historical fictions with a pair that can challenge anything together! Hehe, it's my biggest project yet!

They finally meet in this chapter~ and it's double length because the wait was so long! Alastor's shadow is such a freak <3
Funny story about this artwork in particular was that I was so worried about getting the vibe of their meeting right, that I drew this before even figuring out HOW Vincent would end up in this very compromising position. I just knew that shadow's smile wasn't innocent at all. And then everything came together quite well, after that. x"D

This was just a concept for the prison uniform he would have worn (minus the cap), based on some of the outfits from old photographs taken around the time period.
The number on his suit is a placeholder; I couldn't really think of a good number and didn't want to overlap his records with any prisoners from history, and so I kinda just put something random there for now lol. I did this drawing all in one night on the day of releasing this chapter, so I just wanted to get something out there. I plan to change all these when I get better (and faster) at art!
There are also many more scenes I could have drawn for this chapter, but I didn't want to spoil the moments for anyone (and they would have taken longer to get right, since I'm not a very fast artist). Maybe one day I'll draw them!
[Even if my Twt account is giving me trouble and I miss how many people it could reach, I also am kind of glad I can blabber on here without worrying about keeping it concise. Though I used to always be able to cut down my words to EXACTLY the Twt character limit, which I found some pride in x"D ] thank you for listening to my unrelated musings, and do enjoy the fic if you give it a try~ I've poured my heart into it!
