For Ignatius of Loyola a "spiritual exercise" was anything that prepares us to receive the grace of God. If we perceive spiritual exercises to be limited to explicitly personal and private religious practices, there is a problem for those who desire to remain profoundly engaged with the public world. Such a belief only reinforces the excarnate understanding of God operating only—primarily—in our inner worlds.
