The Cadaver Synod: The Trial of a Dead Pope
In 897, Pope Stephen VI exhumed his predecessor and put him on trial. Known as the Cadaver Synod, this bizarre episode in Church history was more than madness—new research reveals it was a political and religious power play.

(897 AD): In one of history's most bizarre trials, Pope Stephen VI had the corpse (who had been dead for about nine months) of his predecessor, Pope Formosus, exhumed. The cadaver was dressed in papal robes, propped up on a throne, and put on trial for alleged canonical violations. He accused Formosus of perjury, of having acceded to the papacy illegally, and illegally presiding over more than one diocese at the same time. At the end of the trial, Formosus was pronounced guilty, and his papacy retroactively declared null, his body stripped, mutilated, and thrown into the Tiber River. This gruesome event was later annulled by another pope.
Me, disillusioned and delusional from querying agents and getting so many rejections: "My work simply isn't marketable. Perhaps I should write a romance surrounding the events of the Cadaver Synod of 897, that's totally marketable."
Saint Malleus
When the Mortaccio character sparked my concept of Saint Malleus, I hadn't fallen fully into City of Heroes yet, but I had been playing Homecoming sporadically. I didn't know what else to do with the character, so I made him into a CoH hero.
At first he was named Saint Clavicle, and his initial costume was pretty awkward looking. I made the costume shown above after I had become far more fluent with the costume creator.
Instead of taking the obvious path of making him a healer (which is not as crucial a role in CoH as it is in many MMOs), I chose Energy Blast and Darkness Manipulation as his power sets. I colored the Energy attacks white with gold to give them a "holy radiance" feel.
