Which is better, the ZERO system or the EXAM system?
The ZERO (Zoning & Emotional Range Omitted) System was originally developed for Wing Zero, a mobile suit considered too powerful for any pilot, and by extension, operation Meteor. To directly quote from the Wiki:
“The ZERO System connects directly with the mind of the pilot, flooding him with combat data and possible outcomes. This overload of data could allow the pilot to achieve total victory, but places great mental and emotional stress on the pilot. Those exposed to the ZERO... System can become totally unstable, unable to tell the difference between friend and foe. Victims may even suffer mental breakdown or death.”
The EXAM System (EXAM Newtype Simulation Control System) is a mysterious black box that was developed to counter Newtype abilities on the battlefield, and through some convoluted process of technology and a forsaken Newtype soul, gives normal pilots the abilities of a Newtype while in use.
Both technologies grant pilots the ability to “foresee” the future events in a battle, the ZERO system plotting possibilities and the EXAM system allowing what is essentially mindreading, but really, which one’s better?
Now, I’m tempted to just say the EXAM system is better, because it takes a mysterious force that’s supposed to make humans understand each other better and immediately puts it into a mobile suit. However, there is a complication. The UC has countless technologies that either make use of or try to counter Newtype abilities for the sake of warfare. While the EXAM system fits the theme, it’s a drop in the bucket.
Meanwhile, the ZERO system was developed without Newtypes to prompt it, and even before Mobile Dolls (not as cute as the name implies) flooded the battlefield. It both runs parallel to and against a theme of Wing Gundam- that war becomes less and less human as technology improves- or something like that. It turns the human into part of a machine... but a human is still part of the machine, or something deep like that. Most importantly, while the EXAM system emphasizes the humanity of war (because Newtypes don’t counter machines, they counter their pilots- at least I think, Newtypes are weird) the ZERO system focuses on countering the machines of war, emphasizing outcomes, data, (and when paired with Wing Zero’s Twin Buster Rifle) brutal efficiency with little risk. Humans that deviate from the data (depending on your opinions of how strong data analysis can be, and how individual humans are), in contrast, can mute the effects of the ZERO system.
This becomes muddied, in a good way, when you realize the other suit that uses the ZERO system was the Epyon, a mobile suit that even beats out both Exia and Barbatos for the title of “Has literally no Ranged Weapons.” It even has a flight form that- is, of course, unarmed, and barely more aerodynamic than the base form. The energy sword bleeds energy, and due to the fragility of most mobile suits, is barely more effective than the standard beam saber. Its design, while edgy, is there to inspire fear- fear that would not affect, or even be registered by, the rational machine. Only the inefficient human would choose to use the Epyon, and only against the inefficient human does the Epyon shine.
Now, my half-hearted philosophical bullshitting (because anything that descends into musing is pretentious) may seem like I favor the ZERO system, but that’s just Wing Nostalgia. The EXAM system could have theoretically been used to give all humans a better understanding of one another- unlike many Newtype weapons like bits and psychoframes or the like, and the lack of that for the sake of a weapon makes it all the more thematic. The ZERO system had no such possibility. The EXAM system had that whole “powered by a forsaken soul” thing going for it, which immediately made it cursed. The ZERO system just says “you go crazy because human mind weak.” Which, while I admit contributes to the theme by saying there is some merit to the “remove humans from war and just have machines do it... or something” argument... that’s a stretch.
In the end, both suit their respective universes really well in their own ways, the EXAM system by being humanity using a newfound gift for warfare, the ZERO system by emphasizing both the machine and human aspects of war, and how “well” they mesh together.
What, you were expecting a powerlevels argument? Someone post “gundam.jpg-”

So this turned up today, there are English descriptions! Does anyone know if there are other kits like this?
