Last Friday, Trump issued a permit for TransCanada to build the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. As usual, he lied a lot.

Trump claimed the pipeline would create “A lot of jobs; 28,000 jobs. Great construction jobs.” In reality, the pipeline will create about 3,900 direct construction jobs if built over one year, or 1,950 if the work is spread over two years. Once the pipeline opens, it will require only 35 full-time permanent jobs.

Trump also claimed the pipeline would have to use U.S.-made pipe “or we’re not building one.” But TransCanada would not commit to using U.S.-made steel, and the White House has since confirmed that it won’t. In fact, about 40% of the steel for the pipeline is coming from EVRAZ, a Russian company, and most of the rest is coming from Welspun Corp, an Indian company.

EVRAZ, by the way, is 31% owned by a Russian gentleman named Roman Abramovich... who just happens to be not only a close ally of Vladimir Putin but also a family friend of--you guessed it--Donald Trump.
