The smart phone relapse
A week or so ago I was reading a story on my smart phone before I had to get up for work. I didn’t want to put it down so I decided to bring the smart phone with me as my work as WiFi so I could hook up to it. On the short 2 minute drive to work I was filled with horrible anxiety. I am not sure if the anxiety was about going back on my word to not use it, sudden regret about changing my phone plan only to have to change it back (I have not yet changed the phone plan, I still need to stop in to get that fixed.) Or if the anxiety came from something else entirely. I was sick to my stomach with anxiety. During my shift I caved and used my smart phone several times on the job. I went to the bathroom and spent some time in the bathroom using my phone. My break, my lunch, any down time I had, I was using my smart phone. I was almost scared by how easy it was to fall into those old habbits. After that I made a resolution with myself to not bring it to work. I had originally thought I would use it on my break or lunch, but it clearly becomes to big of a temptation. But when I didn’t have it, when I just had my normal slider phone I was completely fine. I wasn’t pinning away for it, I wasn’t going to withdrawls from it...... but when it was in the building, sitting at my desk with me, it was too much to ignore it.
The power that a cell phone can have over a person is truely frightening. I am happy to continue with my downgraded phone for now. My sister is switiching back to a smart phone in a few days after 2 months with the downgraded phone. She is a store manager and was transfered to a new store farther away, so she said she needed to be able to keep in contact with her friend manager she is leaving behind. She needed to be able to do group text, video, video links and internet photos and such. She did make rules like no social media and no games on the phone. We shall see how that works out for her.
Beware the all consuming power of smart phones and technology.
