I think one of the things I'm having to process with my art as I get older is growing out of the age where it's inherently impressive to be able to do anything creative at all semi-competently. I think my art has been able to stand on its own for a few years now at least in regards to being technically competent; but I think for most of my life I've relied on the free validation that comes with being able to think "Heh... I'm only a baby and still my anime drawings look this good."
And now I haven't been a baby in a while. I've done art seriously for like a decade and a half by now so there's nothing Novel or Interesting about the fact that it's technically competent anymore because Yeah, I Sure Hope It Would Be. One of the things I strive for the most is that my art will be Novel and Interesting; being mid is like my greatest fear and has been for a while.
The digital art landscape is so oversaturated with Brilliant artists and even more saturated with Good and Mid artists. I think I've been able to hide behind my youth-to-skill ratio to cosplay as a Brilliant artist to myself when in my humble opinion I am not there yet. I consider myself Good but not Brilliant. But I probably will also never feel like I've achieved Brilliance because the plight of never being satisfied with our artistic output is like the core pillar to 99% of art brains so who knows. Maybe Brilliance is a subjective construct that is in the eye of the beholder.
On a constant journey to fall in love in my art and make her flourish in the way she's supposed to and one of those things currently is accepting that I am no longer the lightweight prodigy I have contextualized myself as; I'm just another adult with a craft they've honed and will keep honing into the grave. A little ego-deathy but it's necessary skin to shed.
