It’s incredible how a single show-runner can ruin the whole show
I’m watching Star Trek: Voyager at the moment (for the first time) and up until the 5th season I could say with complete certainty that it is my favourite ST-show after ST:TOS. But in the 5th season with the new show-runner taking over it became darker, sinister, boring, and it acquired a certain unpleasant undercurrent - you know, like a faint smell of something rotting rising to the surface.
In those episodes written by the show-runner himself the characters look and feel evil and I keep thinking that they have been taken over by aliens - they even act evil sometimes. It seems logical to assume that he wished to take the show evil!Janeway way. His focus on Janeway, Seven of Nine, and the Doctor gets tiring quickly too. I’m watching the show with my mom and she falls asleep every time we watch such episodes.
At the same time in the episodes written by other creators of the show everything seems to be back to normal - the characters are familiar and engaging, the stories interesting and exciting - and it is a real pleasure to watch them. But I wonder how much of the show is going to be anything but pleasant to watch from now on.
Of course, it’s not the first TV-show that started going downhill in its 5th season and I keep asking myself why some show-runners feel the need to go dark and ruin their own shows by murdering their characters’ characters and mutilating their storylines?
