…      unmoving ,  he  stands  looking over  the  edge  ,  breath  shallow ,  and  air  thick  with  an  eerie  stillness  that  settles  over  the  rooftop  like  a  suffocating  blanket.  lights  below  flicker ,  sickly  glow  illuminating  the  crumpled  form  far  beneath  them.  the  sound  of  the  impact  still echoing  in  rafe’s  mind ,  sharp  and  final ,  like  the  crack  of  a  storm  splitting  the  sky.  chest  tightening  at  the  thought.  this  wasn’t  part  of  the  plan   —   not  that  there  had  ever been  a  plan ,   but life  always find a way to royally fuck him. but  he  has  to  keep  it  together ,  even  if  every  fiber  of  his  being  threatens  to  break  apart. turns  to  tawni ,  voice  steady  this  time ,  though  it  feels  like  he’s  borrowing  calm  from  a  place  he  does  not  own.   ‘  listen  to  me.  ’   wide  eyes  lock  onto  hers  with  a  quiet  intensity.   ‘  you  gotta  stop  freakin'  out  on  me ,  okay?  this  isn’t  on  us  ..  it’s  on  him.  he  came  at  you ,  tawni.  i  couldn't  let  him  —  ’   his  voice  falters  for  a  fraction  of  a  second,  but  he  catches  it ,  gripping  his  composure  like  it  might  slip  through  his  fingers.  mind  spinning  with  contingencies.   ‘  i  uhh ... i was  just   –   visitin’  my  girlfriend  at  work ,  right ?   and  we  saw  this  guy ,  you'd  cut  him  off  earlier  in  the  night. he  was  drunk  off  his  ass ,  got  too  close  to  edge   –   lost  his  balance  …   fell over. that’s  all  that  happened.  ’   all  anyone  needs  to  know.  lie  tastes  bitter,  but  rolls  off  his  tongue  like  honey.  survival  demands  it. her  trembling  words  cut  through  his  carefully  constructed  facade ,  and  rafe  exhales  slowly ,  his  jaw  tightening.  ‘  hey  ,   hey  ,   hey  …  it's  okay.  ’  tone  softens  but  loses  none  of  its  urgency.  ‘  you’re  scared.  shit ,  i  am  too ,  okay ?  just  breathe   and  trust  me.  we  can  handle  this.  ’   weight  of  her  final  plea  settles  heavily  on  him,  and  something  grips  at  his  chest   —   guilt  ?   protectiveness  ??  all  in  its  most  fractured  form.  ‘  i’m  not  leaving  you.  ’  he  says  firmly,  the  words  a  tether  between  them.  ‘  promise.  ’   takes  her  hand ,  hold  firm  but  not  crushing,  as  if  willing  his  strength  into  her  trembling  fingers.
