So…Harry in a romantic relationship? I fantasise about Harry quite a lot. Just like how it would be to know him. Just simple little things. Or it would be to be in a relationship with him and it got me thinking...

To be honest, I don’t think it’s easy to be in a relationship with Harry. Besides the fact that he’s super busy and always travelling, I feel like he has built walls around himself that take a long while to break through. He seems like an incredibly private person, even with people he knows personally, I get the sense he doesn’t like feeling vulnerable and exposed. Besides, he’s had his privacy violated so much and his heart broken before, that I feel it would take him a very long time to properly trust and open up to someone – even if he wanted to, it would be very hard for him and I think his partner would have to be very patient with him and show him that they truly, truly love him. With his sun in Aquarius, it’s in his nature to be detached and unemotional, though I feel that it conflicts with his Libra moon and it’s almost like he has inner fights about his own feelings and emotions. I truly think he needs a stable, patient and loving partner who will make him feel secure and won’t play games.

Oh, my goodness, I’m so honoured you’re asking for my take on this. Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you any sooner; I was at work all day and just saw this now.  

Ok, so, just like any other piece of lyric, I think it’s all up for interpretation so what I’m about to tell you could be all wrong, but this is my take on MMITH;

So, I defiantly think this song is about love, or more so the loss of it. And as many people say, love can feel like a drug. It can make you see the world differently; it can take your pain away. But drugs may also lead to substance abuse and withdrawals and that’s exactly what I think this song is about. Not necessarily in the sense that Harry abused drugs, but maybe that this love he had for this person was like a drug to him.

“Meet me in the hallway (…) I just left your bedroom”

I think the Hallway and Bedroom are metaphors; It’s like Harry is walking out of that person’s heart and on his way out in the cold, but he’s not all the way out yet. Maybe they met up one last time, and even though Harry knew it was a bad idea; even though he knew the other person didn’t love him as much as he loved them, he wanted to meet with this person because they’re like a drug to him. He knows they’re not good for him, but he can’t help himself.

“Give me some morphine. Is there any more to do?”

Morphine is not only pain medication but also highly addictive, and I think the reason he’s asking for it, is because it’s the only substitute for this person’s love that he no longer has. He seems hopeless in the situation, he feels like he has no other options, nothing left for him to do, to gain back the love.

“Just let me know I’ll be at the door (…) Hoping you’ll come around (…) Just let me know I’ll be on the floor (…) Maybe we’ll work it out”

Even though the person broke it off, and Harry knows it’s over, he’s still willing to take the person back any second they’re willing to take him back. He’s right at the door; ready to work it out and forget all the pain this person has caused him. He’ll be in the floor, I think means he’s let all his guards down, not putting up any fights, being completely at the other person’s mercy.

“I gotta get better (…) And maybe we’ll work it out.”

He feels this it’s his fault, that they’re no longer together and maybe if he just changes, he will win back the person. Maybe he knows he’s been abusing the relationship like a drug and he needs to get better in order to work it out.

“I walked the streets all day. Running with the thieves. 'Cause you left me in the hallway- (Give me some more). Just take the pain away”

Walking the streets all day makes me feel like he’s wandering hopelessly, searching for something to replace his drug; much like many substance abusers spend their day walking the streets for more drugs. Running with the thieves could indicate he’s let himself get carried about by things around him, that could take his mind off of his heartbreak, things that he knows are bad. You left me in the hallway seems like he’s accusing this person for neglecting him in the middle; not letting him know where they stand; are they together or are they over? He’s been left somewhere in the middle in an unfinished relationship, hoping for more. Hoping the person will just take his pain away.

“We don’t talk about it. It’s something we don’t do. ‘Cause once you go without it, nothing else will do.”

I think from what I’ve said before, they don’t talk about this situation of being on/off. And once he’s had a taste of what this person is like, he feels like he’ll never have anything as good again which I think is another drug reference. Because drugs, such as morphine, are so highly addicting, people often feel like they can’t live without it and nothing else is as good.

I think Harry is a very rational person and I think he’s one to try to make sense of every situation. So, when he’s left out of control of a situation, a situation that doesn’t make sense (the whole being on/off) it makes him feel terrible. He will try to fix the situation, maybe by changing himself and just hoping this other person will open their heart to let him in again.

I really think it’s such a beautiful song and I can’t imagine how heartbroken he must have been.

The word which I find best describes Find Line is wondrous. I think it truly is a piece of art, something that belongs in a museum, to be kept for years and years, admired, analysed, inspire. It is such a vulnerable and REAL collection of thoughts and emotions and I truly don’t think there is anything more valuable a person can put out to the public.

It tells a story; not just to the ones who know what events inspired the album, but if you listen closely, you can hear how the first three songs, Golden, Watermelon Sugar, and Adore You, are about that initial infatuation you have with someone, the lust which burns in you, the obsession with every single part of another person.

Then there’s Lights Up which I see as a transition; this is a key point in this relationship between two people where, maybe, they both started to experience changes; not just with themselves but within their partner and their world around them. Lights Up can have many different meanings and interpretations, as art should, and this is just mine. I think it’s a bittersweet song about a person discovering themselves, growing, changing and maybe their partner can’t, and maybe doesn’t want to, keep up. This transitions into the aftermath; the heartbreak.

Cherry, Falling, To Be So Lonely.

I know everyone is infatuated with Cherry - which I btw find very brave of a person as private as Harry to put a voice memo of his ex-girlfriend at the end of the song because it will be a part of his art forever - but for me, Falling is probably the most gut-wrenchingly, sad song on the album. It’s the aftermath of, not just a breakup, but the act of your partner leaving you...leaving you for someone else. These doubts he has about himself; not only does he question her feelings for him; ‘what if I’m someone you won’t talk about,’ it also makes him insecure about himself; ‘what if I’m someone I don’t want a round,’ and that breaks my fucking heart. I can’t imagine how broken he must have felt, how much he doubted himself, how he felt like he wasn’t good enough.

Moving on to She; a well calculated and thoroughly thought through piece of art. I know people have been comping is to Woman, but I don’t think this song is about a romantic love interest. I think it’s about a man, living a double life; on one had he has a regular life with a wife and kids, on the other hand, this woman who lives in his imagination is haunting him to the point where he considers running away because he can’t explain it. I think it’s about the mans sexuality, how he isn’t sure of who he is; feminine vs masculine. I think it’s a continuation of Lights Up and it may show the discovery a person has done in the aftermath of a breakup.

The next set of songs: Sunflower and Canyon moon I think are about his memories about this person who he had to let go of. Fond memories, sad memories, just memories of all kinds and fuck these break my heart. So bittersweet, so vulnerable, so nostalgic.

And then there’s the final two songs, TPWK and Fine Line. Fine Line is probably one of my favourites, it wraps up the entire album in the way it goes through all the themes discussed in the previous songs, love and hate and joy and heartbreak; there’s a fine line between them. I could go into a lot more detail of this song but I honestly don’t have the emotional capacity right now. It’s such a beautiful and bittersweet and reflected song and it ends a brilliant album in the perfect way.

All in all, I think Fine Line is a magic piece of art, it inspires me, it wakes emotions in me that I have never felt and only a real artist, who dares be vulnerable and expose his own emotions, is able to do that to his audience. I can’t believe I’m lucky enough to witness such work of art and I know it will be admired for many many years to come.

I think Harry is very cautious and selective about who he lets into his life which makes me think it would take a lot thinking on his part if he started to get feelings for someone. I get the sense that he likes to be in charge of his emotions and when someone comes along, making him feel things he can’t control, his libra moon makes him act to regain balance and harmony. I think he’d try to think rationally, but anyone who’s ever had feelings for another person knows any rational thoughts are thrown out the window as soon as you see the person’s face. So I think it would take him a while to accept the fact, that he’s developing feelings, but when he finally accepts it, I think he goes through a phase of wanting to be with that person a lot – even though he likes his freedom and space. And I don’t think he would date someone who he isn’t already friends with so just the fact that he suddenly wants to spend more time with that person, is a dead giveaway.

Hmm, that’s a really good question. It’s important to remember that heartbreaks and breakups aren’t the same thing. Because I feel like you can break up with someone you’ve been seeing casually without getting your heart broken. I feel like when that happens, Harry feels more like his trust has been betrayed and his ego bruised more than anything else, but during a heartbreak? I think he’s ego and narcissistic nature get thrown out the window and I honestly think he’d be a fucking wreck.

Harry is such a private person and I feel like his feelings through heartbreak are what he keeps the most hidden because a breakup is essentially a failed relationship and if there’s one thing, I feel like Harry fears, it’s failure. So, I think he would hide away. Not just from the public but also from his friends. I feel like he always wants to seem cool and collected and not being able to manage his emotions, as the true Libra moon he is, would just make him angry, defeated and maybe even ashamed so I feel like he would hide away from everyone.

I also think heartbreak makes it harder for him to trust and open up to someone again. As I’ve said before, it’s in his nature to be detached and unemotional, so when he finally let himself feel and fall in love, and then got his heart broken, it just makes it even harder for him to ever do that again.

I’d like to think he’d wish the best for his ex, but he’s selfish, he says so himself, which makes me think he’d hate to see them move on before him. I feel like he’d go through a “if I can’t have you, no one can,” phase. After a while, I think he’d move on to the phase of acting like he’s on top of the world hoping his ex would see it.
