au where everything is the same except mabel and dipper have been going to gravity falls every year before the show takes place since like kindergarten.

its a pretty simple premise that derives mostly from my desire to explore interpersonal relationships and the ways a place and people can change from a young child’s point of view. it doesn’t change canon that much either, admittedly, i just wanted to draw childhood friends stuff LOL. ill call it uhhhhhhhh every summer au.

#this is why i'm on the fence about conservatives ever being allowed to have any decision making power in governments and institutions #because so many conservatives i've spoken to can't seem to imagine anything else but what exists #and in an ever-changing world this is a really stupid and poisonous position to be in #nothing stays the same—ever!—everything constantly changes and evolution requires adaptability #this is also why we need to cultivate curiosity in people. i cannot wrap my head around people who aren't curious about the way things work #the way things are built where they come from how they were made how they work what's the story behind it all etc etc #being incurious seems like such a waste of a sentient mind

people are correct to be pointing out how silly a lot of the #su critical was in retrospect, but i also think the goofiness of the lilly-orchardesque "rebecca sugar is a fascist apologist" vocal minority has also resulted in people overcorrecting to a degree. or maybe overcorrecting is the wrong word, but at the very least i don't believe there's a world where people would have engaged with the show in this specific way and gotten so heated about it if the show did not seem to arbitrarily change how seriously it wanted you to take its worldbuilding and conflicts episode by episode. The tonal dissonance was present in the show itself, and not entirely fabricated by young adults with too much tumblrbrain projecting their politics onto the source material unprompted

one of the moments of steven universe i remember with the most clarity is when steven explicitly refers to his mother as a war criminal in those exact words. when that is literally the text of your work i don't think you can entirely blame the audience for engaging with it on those terms. notably, this happens in the episode whose plot is "lars is embarrassed that he likes to bake cakes"

#i really enjoyed the show for awhile but just ended up falling off of it as everything got more contrived and the pacing got worse #i wonder how the pacing feels watching it archivally without the insane release windows #someday i will probably give it another shot just to see how much my feelings have changed. because i know theyll be different #anyway steven universe's worst writing crime is nothing to do with any of the worldbuilding or politics #and is in fact asking people to tolerate lars being on screen for any amount of time

finally. FINALLY. getting into mordred's side of things, but first I wanted to spend a minute with medraut without mordred in mind to get a feel for things long gone so that I'll have a better grasp on where everything ends up wrt the french cycles etc before I start really breaking things down and examining the horror of family and pulling at threads to see what character unravels from all that.

#knights knights knights!#medraut looks like kay on purpose which is a horrible surprise tool that will ruin arthur's life later depending on what i do with mordred #who is. different. but the same. i might also change this later and give medraut shorter hair and mordred way longer hair #you'll always be able to tell kay and medraut apart because medraut/mordred is going to be a goth bitch forever and kay's color is red #ive basically made my peace with having to do a version set during the mabinogion (sort of) and then a french cycle 'sequel'#ish. it's like the cast has been resurrected for another go at things and everything is worse. it'll make sense when i do more of it #the story is eating itself is what im getting at << this clarifies nothing #idk i feel like you all saw me meander around figuring out perceval and kay. we're going to do that with mordred #I also need to pry open morgause as a character and im torn between a couple different directions to go in #but for any of this to work morgause and guinevere must be. like. Figured Out as characters. they're like the narrative load bearing weight #for this part of the drama. which would also be easier for me personally if i didnt misspell their names all the time #anyway. i have an arc for morgause in mind and i think it's the one im going to commit to but for it to work i have to go back a generation #and shove my hands in the guts of everyone's parents and rattle around their rib cages for a bit. everything comes back to how we're #all fucked before we were born. which is the main theme i care about exploring. and other stuff ofc
