Jay coughed and reached for his coffee, taking a swig.
“You okay?” she asked.
He nodded, blinking.
“Swallowed the wrong way,” he said, his voice strained. He cleared his throat a couple of times before speaking again. “Your parents are going to let me sleep in the same room as you? Scandalous.”
She rolled her eyes and lightly tapped his hand with hers.
“They think we’re dating. Well, that I’m dating someone.”
“I’ll sleep on the floor or something,” Jay said, crinkling up the paper pouch, stained by the oil from his hash brown.
“You won’t be sleeping on the floor. We can share my bed.”
“That’s how all those fanfics start. I’ve read enough of them to know.”
“You still read them. And write them. You had Zane edit one last week. Wasn't it about Fritz and Kiflin?”
“I know my tropes! And, yes, it was. Thank you for remembering that.”
She snorted a laugh.
“No, seriously, though,” Jay said. “I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“Jay, my bed is big enough for two people. I mean, it’s a full size mattress, so it might be a little cramped with two of us. But so long as you don’t smack me in my sleep, we’ll be okay.”
“If you’re sure…”
“Jay, if you’re uncomfortable, you can say something. I asked you to be a part of this. You have a say in these things too.”
“I know, I know. It’s just… I like having you as a, uh, as a friend, Nya. I don’t want to find out anything that could ruin that. Like, you drooling in your sleep.”
“Then we already have a problem.”
